2nd Saturday starts

Columbia's 2nd Saturday Café opens its 10th season with a performance by the Alan Scott Band Saturday, Nov. 14, 8-11 p.m., at Oliver's Carriage House, located at 5410 Leaf Trader Way in Town Center. Scott is an award-winning singer-songwriter who is a past winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. His trio plays modern rock, and the concert will feature a special appearance by bassist Scott Ambush, a member of the group Spyro Gyra.

Admission of $20 includes snacks, soda, dessert and coffee. Wine and beer will also be available for purchase. Proceeds are donated to Agape House. For tickets and information, go to www.2ndsaturdaycafe.com.

Grande music

J&B Blue, Bob Brill and Steve Lanocha will perform as part of the Music Matters Songwriter's Showcase Saturday, Nov. 14, 6:30-9:30 p.m., at Java Grande Café, located at 9050 Baltimore National Pike in Ellicott City. Admission is free. Call 410-480-3865.

Beethoven plus

Howard Community College's music department will host a "Beethoven Piano Sonata Concert III" Saturday, Nov. 14, 7:30 p.m. in the Smith Theatre. The concert will feature pianist Anne Koscielny, quickly gaining a reputation as one of the region's foremost interpreters of Beethoven's piano music.

Koscielny has performed the complete cycle of Beethoven piano sonatas throughout the United States. She plans to perform the following sonatas for the Nov. 14 concert: Op. 22, Op. 90, Op. 49 No. 1 and Op. 31 and No. 3 ("The Hunt"). The evening begins at 6:15 p.m. with a pre-concert lecture by Dr. Marian Buck-Lew. Tickets range from $12-$29. Call 410-772-4900.
