AT THE CENTER

The more I look, the more I have come to appreciate the teenage population in our society. From what I can see, teenagers of today are more involved in sports, more technologically savvy, more involved in community fund-raising projects and more informed about politics and the world around them than my generation ever was (not that I am that old!)

So, what does a teenager of today do when he or she is not fully immersed in the world around them? Work on a goal

Zoe Paregol, a freshman at Glenelg High School, and a member of her Student Government Association, has a goal in mind. She is planning on a trip to Europe next summer and was looking for a constructive way to help pay for some of her expenses. When her mother informed her that Oct. 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. that the Glenwood Community Center would host a Kids/Teens Only Garage Sale, she set to work around her home.

So far, she has compiled a lot of children's games, including a Lilly's Plastic Purse game and Jumangi. What's her sales pitch? "These are cool fun games!" Would there be any bargains on Zoe's table? You bet. She has a mini-golf game for sale that would be ideal for a 4-year-old boy for only $5.

Good luck to Zoe and other participants! To reserve a table and space, call 410-313-4840. Cost: $10.

For teens with a fitness goal in mind, the center has much to offer. The weight room is open to teens ages 13-15 after they complete the four-week teen weight training program offered on Thursdays, beginning Oct. 2 or Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. Certified trainer Leo Conlan will teach fitness room etiquette, proper stretching, cardio equipment usage, and proper techniques of weight and machine usage. Please note: a medical clearance form is required.

Many exercise classes, too, which are offered at the center, welcome teens. Get on the Ball and Strength-n-Fit will begin their next session Oct. 2 at 5:15 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.

For those who like to cover more ground, the center invites youth from ages 9-14, to participate in the HC Youth Cross-Country Meets. Beginning and experienced runners are invited to participate in these unique events at the Western Regional Park Oct. 18 at 9:30 a.m. Awards will be given to top male and female runners in each division. Registration required. Cost: $15.

For those who like to go the extra 3.1 miles, the Department of Recreation and Parks invites beginning and experienced runners ages 10 and up, to participate in the Harvest Harrier 5K Trail Race at Rockburn Branch Park (Elkridge) Oct. 4 at 9:30 a.m. Registration required. Cost: $17.

What does Zoe like to do for fun? Going to the mall or hanging out with friends is at the top of her list. Perhaps she would like to know that the center would be hosting a Monster Mash Oct. 24 from 7 to 9 p.m. The event is open to all students in grades 6-8. One can look forward to Halloween music and dancing, refreshments, and a real ghoulish time. Those who arrive in costume will be eligible to participate in the costume contest and receive a treat. Bring a goblin or a ghost! Cost: $5.

For registration and information, call 410-313-4840 or go to www.howardcountymd.gov/rap.
