SENIOR CIRCLES

Today, things are rather hurried because we are planning a short trip and, as always, I'm trying to do everything at once!

In citing the next Senior Idol Audition in a previous column, I apologize it was not clear where one should go or call to register. It is to be held Oct. 21, 10 a.m. to noon at the Bain Center (410-313-7213), but to register for the audition, visit or call Gigi at the front desk of the Ellicott City Senior Center at 410-313-1400. The finals for the contest are at the Office on Aging's "Annual Thanksgiving Celebration -- Singing Thanks", Ten Oaks Ballroom in Clarksville Nov. 19 at 10:30 a.m.

Another senior activity in which four of the Ellicott City Senior Center seniors participated and had outstanding results was the table tennis competition at the Maryland Senior Olympics, held Sept. 20 in Eldersburg. The ECSC participants were Richard Asendorf, Vesta Ellerbe, Madge Gourley and Jack Maddox. Maddox also participated in the Senior Olympics bowling event, getting a gold medal in doubles and a bronze in the singles.

The table tennis results were: Asendorf earned a bronze medal in the singles and a silver in men's doubles; Ellerbe earned two golds (one in women's singles and one in mixed doubles) and a silver in women's doubles (with Madge Gourley); Gourley earned a gold (women's singles) and two silver (one in mixed doubles with Jack and one in women's doubles with Vesta); and Maddox earned a gold (mixed doubles with Madge) and two silver (one in men's doubles with Richard and on in men's singles). Congratulations to Ellicott City Senior Center Olympic table tennis "pros"!

Don't forget to reregister: Each year the Senior Center members/users must be documented, necessitating reregistering. It does not take but a minute to stop at the front desk, check your last year's registration, making sure there have been no changes, initial and you have completed your part in the yearly statistics gathering effort. (And, Carla says "You may even win a $50 gift card!")

Meanwhile, after having had bare walls in the Great Room for a few weeks, isn't it great to know the paintings are coming back? We are so fortunate to have really great artists making the Ellicott City Senior Center their home! Until one loses the things that had been taken for granted, we seldom realize how much we appreciate them. Thank you, Carol Zink, and "Painting Together Crew"!

Upcoming events

The 10th annual 50+Expo is Oct. 17. With the expo providing flu shots for the hundreds of seniors who attend, we all consider it a big plus, if for no more than that benefit. But there is always so much more there that most of us go year after year. This year the entertainment by the Milkshake Trio starts at 9:30 a.m. in the Rouse Theatre, and of course, with this being an election year, The Capitol Steps with its political satire will be an especially enticing appetizer!

"Fall Prevention: Simple Steps to Safety" by Harriet Watkins, director of our own co-located Senior Plus Center, offers a much-needed workshop for those of us older than 65 (and how many of us have much higher age numbers?), Oct. 21, 11 a.m., free, register at front desk.

Fall Luncheon and Show by the Fabulous Fifty Plus Players, with their "Radio Daze Show", and catered, Oct. 23, 11 a.m., by ticket only.
