The U.S. Coast Guard announced that Andrew Drummond Ray, of Ellicott City, has been recognized for superior academic achievement and leadership potential. Ray attends Wilde Lake High School and accepted an appointment to attend the Coast Guard Academy and will be sworn-in as a member of the class of 2013 on June 29.

He is the son of David and Lisa Ray and grandson of Ann Herard, of Greensboro, N.C., and David L. Ray, of Alamogordo, N.M.

Army National Guard Pvt. Curtis Lawhorne Jr. has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.

Lawhorne is the son of Lejuene Sanders, of Jessup.

Cpt. Joseph A Tortella, son of Frank and Carol Tortella, of Columbia, received a master's of science degree in engineering management from the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, in Dayton, Ohio, March 26. Tortella graduated from Howard High School in 2000 and he received a bachelor's of science degree in civil engineering from the Air Force Academy in 2004. Upon graduation he was commissioned through the Air Force Academy and assigned to the 89th Civil Engineer Squadron as a member of the Presidential Wing at Andrews Air Force Base. In July, Tortella will be assigned to the 51st Civil Engineer Squadron at Osan Air Base, Republic of South Korea.
