Miguel Alvarado, of Gaithersburg, announces the engagement of his daughter, Kayra Z. Alvarado, to Mario E. Merrills, son of Shirley and Albert Merrills, of Columbia. The bride-to-be's mother is the late Vianca Alvarado.

The bride-to-be is a graduate of Gaithersburg High School. She received a master's degree from the University of Maryland in education and is currently a Spanish teacher for the Montgomery County Public School System.

The future groom is a graduate of Wilde Lake High School. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland. He is currently a personal trainer at Colosseum Gym and a para-educator with Howard County public schools.

A destination wedding in the Dominican Republic is being planned for spring 2010.
