The You Can Always Come Home Players, River Hill High School Theatre Alumni, will present their first summer production of Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie” in the school auditorium Thursday-Saturday, June 26-28 at 7:30 p.m. Pam Land plays Amanda Wingfield, a character described by some as the “Mother from Hell;” Emily Woodhouse plays her daughter, Laura; and Alex Fast is her son, Tom. Andrew Boetcher holds the role of Jim, “the long-delayed, but always expected something we live for” gentleman caller.

Walk-up crowds at showtime are expected to be heavy. You can avoid delay by purchasing tickets in advance. The cost is $10. Proceeds will go to the River Hill High School Fine Arts Scholarship Fund. The box office will be open for advance ticket purchases Wednesday, June 25 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and again Thursday and Friday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. On Saturday June 28, the box office will only be open from 6-7:30 p.m.

Yard sale June 29

By Darleen Sanford
Posted: June 24, 2008

Hey, everybody. I’m going to have my first ever yard sale at 12598 Route 108 on June 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Former Dayton residents, Margaret and Paul Klim — experienced yard salers — are coming to help. During our 33 years living just south of St. Louis Church on Route 108, my in-laws, parents, grandmother and favorite aunt have all died leaving “treasures” for us to haul home to Clarksville.

These treasures are known as “trash” to my sons. They have finally convinced mom that nobody lives forever, you can’t take it with you and some of this stuff must go. If you’re out for a Sunday drive, even at the current price of gas, stop and shop. I’ll be delighted to say hello to you and goodbye to some of my things.

The Western Howard County Fever (14-U girls), from Clarksville, won the ASA Maryland State Championship June 8 at Love Point Park, on Kent Island. The Fever lost its first game of the double-elimination tournament and had to win seven consecutive games to win the tournament. The Fever beat the Maryland Chill, Churchville Lightning, the Champions, Maryland Stars, Frederick Heartbreakers and the Bayside Blues to win the coveted championship.

The Fever was led by the pitching of Haylie Goheen, Amanda Segrist and Ashton Maseth. The trio combined to allow only 15 earned runs during the tournament. The team’s hitting was led by Ali Braun (.533), Erica Makar (.500), Hannah Braun (.423) and Kylie Pritchard (8 RBIs).

The Fever was led defensively by its outfield of Melanie Slayton, Stephanie McGowan and Allie James.

The team has won four tournament titles in three different states thus far this year and has qualified to play in three national events: the ASA Nationals in Midland, Texas, the PONY Nationals in Cary, N.C. and the USSSA Nationals in Orlando, Fla.

The Fever has a combined record of 26-5 for the year.

Drum Corps Competition

Do you love to see and hear marching bands? With sky-high gas prices, you will be pleased to know outstanding Drum Corps competitions do not require long distance drives. You can enjoy great entertainment while supporting young local musicians.

Jersey Surf’s Summer Classic will be held in Wildwood, N.J., June 21. Jersey Surf members include four River Hill High students: Kendra Orcutt (class of 2008) and Evan Berry (’09) play trumpet. Mark Mangus (’09) can be spotted with the tuba and Mike McNeill (’10) plays baritone.

Becoming a Drum Corp member requires facing stiff competition in try-pouts. Once you’ve made it into the band, there will be rigorous rehearsals from November until the serious summer competition tour. Remember, these kids are on tour. After the performance, look them up and give words of encouragement and appreciation. They look forward to seeing folks from home.

Other local musicians are member of other Drum Corps bands. Brian Whitney, River Hill classi of ’08, plays tuba with Carolina Crown. Joe Lewis (’06) plays baritone with the Cadets. Sara Hines, from Atholton High School, plays baritone with the Cadets. The Cadets, Crown and Surf will all be in Clifton, N.J., July 5 and Coatesville, Pa., July 6.
