Bring on Breakfast This Sunday

Bring the neighbors, family, friends and your hearty appetite to the Ten Oaks Ballroom on Sunday, Oct. 19 from 8 a.m.until noon. The Fifth District VFD will be serving up pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, scrapple, applesauce, breakfast beverages and most all the yummy things you look for in a good old country breakfast.

Proceeds help pay for additional equipment used to protect our community in case of fire or other emergencies.

Family Fun Festival this Saturday

River Hill Garden Center on Route 108 will host a Family Fun Festival on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 5-8 p.m. You can look forward to a festive fall evening of live music, a magic show, pumpkin painting and decorating, scarecrow making, hot dogs on the grill, popcorn, cider and more. Music, Music, Music This Thursday

In a very relaxed setting with refreshments, you will be able to enjoy a sampling of all the music departments at River Hill High School Thursday, Oct. 16 beginning at 7 p.m. The Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Orchestra, Concert Choir and Madrigal Singers will all be performing in the RHHS Dining Center.

The RHHS Department of Music proudly presents the sixth annual “POPS” Concert, “Music For a Darkened Theatre.” A delightful evening of music from around the world will be presented by members of our award-winning music program. There will be numerous theme basket raffles with such interesting titles as “Dramatic Ending,” “I Love Musicals”, “Comedy Club”, Romantic Evening”, “Action Packed” and more. Movie food and snacks will be available for purchase. You can participate in the Movie Trivia Contest. and enjoy free popcorn for all.

Due to limited seating, advance ticket purchases are recommended. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students and seniors. Children 10 and under will be admitted free. A Driven Young Cookie Man

Matt Beck is a driven young man in more than one sense of the word. He is driven to help fight cancer in a unique way. He is also driven to deliver cookies. Matt does not yet have a driver’s license. Parents James and Marleen Beck are so very proud of him. Keep reading and you’ll learn one reason for their pride. Then, ask yourself, How many adults have accomplished as much for charity?

Matt recently wrote, “Dear Friends, Family and Community Members:

“Hi, my name is Matthew Beck and I am a proud student of the Howard County Public School System. I began, with the aid of my mother, ‘Cookies for Cancer’ to help gather donations for the American Cancer Society in the fall of 2007. Many of my loved ones (and possibly yours) have suffered from cancer. I hope through your generous donations we can help better the lives of cancer patients, promote awareness of the disease and ultimately find a cure. Last year through all of your gracious donations, ‘Cookies for Cancer’ was able to raise $5,550 for the ACS. My goal for this year is to raise $10.000 for the American Cancer Society by baking and delivering 400 dozen cookies of my own recipe. With each $25 donation on your part, you will receive a dozen of my gourmet cookies (Triple Chocolate Chip or Mint Chocolate Chip) of you choice. Thank you very much for your participation. Together WE CAN make a difference.”

Last year’s total has already been exceeded and Matt is well on his way to reaching his $10,000 goal with your help.

Traditional chocolate chip cookies have always been my favorites, but Matt’s Mint Chocolate Chip version is melt-in-your-mouth yummy. They were the first to get polished off in my house. If you have plenty of will power, you could wrap them in foil and freeze for serving to guests during the holiday season. Hometown Professor Wins Award

Lifelong Clarksville resident, Linda Shenk, now an assistant professor of English at Iowa State University, was recently named the Jerry Shakeshaft Master Teacher in Humanities and Social Sciences for the 2008-09 academic year in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Shakeshaft Master Teacher title is awarded annually at Iowa State to an outstanding teacher in the humanities and social sciences in honor of Jerry Shakeshaft, a long-time political science professor at Iowa State who was dedicated to the principle of undergraduate teaching.

Linda’s enthusiasm for teaching the works of Shakespeare and early modern British Literature have earned her the affectionate nickname “Shenkspeare” among her students. One colleague observed, “Her classroom style allows students to see Shakespeare as a source of humor, brilliant thinking and fun—something they can adapt to various uses as English majors, teachers or good citizens.” Linda Shenk enables her students to be active learners and “teaches with the utmost enthusiasm and passion for her subject and students.” While doing that, she is also creating hometown pride. Congratulations, Linda.
