Girls Donate Pony Tails for Locks of Love

Hooray to a group of generous young Elkridge neighbors for donating their hair to Locks of Love.

Amanda Green, Amanda Kozak, Samantha Eggleston, Alina and Tesia Wieprecht all, on different occasions, took the plunge and trimmed of at least 10 inches of their hair for a worthy cause.

According to its Web site, www.locksoflove.org, it is a public nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. It meets a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Its mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need.

Watermont Swim Team Needs Sponsors

The Watermont Swim Team, of Elkridge will be hosting its annual Swim-A-Thon to benefit the American Cancer Society. The event will take place Tuesday, July 8 and all are invited to particiapte by sponsoring swimmers for this great cause.

A donation per lap for a designated swimmer or flat contribution to The American Cancer Society are both acceptable. All donations are tax deductible.

“We are doing this in honor and celebration of Coach Lynn, who is a breast cancer survivor; Eileen Bednar, who is an ovarian cancer survivor, and Caroline Herrmann, a 14-year-old member of our team currently fighting brain cancer. Let’s do our best to raise money to find a cure,” said Donna Smith, coordinator of the event.

The children will swim as many laps as they can, with enthusiastic encouragement along the way. A treat will be served afterwards as a way to celebrate the childrens’ success.

The Maryland Chill are State Champs!

The Maryland Chill 14U O’Connor fast pitch softball team became state champions when the team went undefeated at the USSSA Maryland State Tournament June 20-22 in Glen Burnie.

Tournament games were played at Randazzo Park, in Glen Burnie, with the championship bracket games played at Bachman Sports Complex, in Glen Burnie.

The championship game had a definite Howard County flair as the O’Connor team faced off against the Western Howard County Fever Black 14U. The Chill came away with a 7-3 victory to earn the championship. In the championship bracket, the Chill beat the Churchville Lightning, 4-3, to reach the title game in the double-elimination tournament. The Chill went 6-0 in the tournament, outscoring its opponents a combined 31-9.

“This is the first time two Howard County teams have placed first and second in the (state tournament),” United States Specialty Sports Association Director Bill Dowell said at the ceremony following the contest.

The community is very excited as this is the very first time Maryland Chill has taken the name “Maryland State Champs.”

” What a weekend! I am so proud of all of the girls. They played so well all weekend. What a total team effort. At some point this weekend every one of the girls made a play or got a hit or did something to contribute to our state championship,” coach Chris O’Connor said.

Congratulations to The Maryland Chill O’Connor team, they qualified for the USSSA Girls Fast pitch World Series in Kissimmee, FL and the 2008 PONY National Tournament in Cary, NC. They will play in the PONY Nationals in Cary, NC at the end of July.

Cramm to Speak at Elkridge Heritage Society Meeting

Joetta Cramm, the author of “A Pictorial History of Howard County.” will be the speaker at the July 8 meeting of the Elkridge Heritage Society to be held at the meeting room in the Elkridge Branch Library. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and all are invited to attend. Cramm will show slides of historical landmarks as part of her presentation.

Anybody See the Rainbow?

I was hosting a Novel Idea’s book club at my house last night, with local members Kris Jackson, Colleen McDowell, Lynn Hunter, Kathleen Huffman, MaryJo Dennis, Marlene Valley and Suzanne Flinchbaugh when my husband, Paul, let us know about the rainbow. We all ran out the front door, onto the porch and sidewalk and even though it was still sprinkling, it was a lovely evening. We all looked in awe at the full arch rainbow spread gloriously across the sky. What a beautiful sight!

I was just wondering if anyone else saw the it, and how you were spending the summer Elkridge evening when you noticed the rainbow.
