It seems like we have suffered through a cool, wet spring, however warmer days are ahead, and with it comes strawberry season. There are plenty of opportunites to enjoy some of this locally grown fruit. Several evenings and Saturday mornings, I have driven by the Frederick-Bittner house on Ten Oaks Road to see one of the boys outside selling strawberries from his neighbor’s patch. I have to admit that I did buy some, with visions of making my grandmother’s poundcake and adding the fresh berries on top, however the kids ate the sweet berries faster then I could cut them up! You can always check out the Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings at the Glenwood Branch Library for some fresh berries, or set out to pick your own straight from the field. Larriland Farm, just three miles south of I-70 on Route 94 in Woodbine is a great place to take the family. The picking will continue until about mid-June. It’s always a good idea to call ahead if you plan on picking at Larriland. Feel free to call them at 410-442-2605 or 301-854-6110 for additional information. You can also go to its Web site, www.pickyourown.com.
Have you been busy cleaning out the closet with clothes your children have outgrown over the school year? Members of the Moore family, Georgea, Pate and Lee, along with several others from the Glenelg community will be travelling to Honduras this summer to work at El Hogar de Amor y Esperanza Orphanage (The Home of Love and Hope). Last year two volunteers from our community collected new and gently used jeans (no holes). They carried 81 pairs with them! This year they plan to continue with this effort, and are currently collecting jeans sized to fit ages 4-14. All items are for boys and can be dropped off in the Glenwood Middle School front office. The Moores extend a hearty “gracias” in advance for any donations provided. The orphanage is very much in need of the jeans. If you want to know more about the orphanage you can go to www.elhogar.org.
