Now That’s A Lot of Cookies!

Over the past few weeks, I shared news of the Western Howard County Relay for Life which took place June 20-21, and highlighted some of the local community members who participated in the event. Not long after this information appeared in the paper, it was brought to my attention that another community member deserves recognition for his fundraising efforts for the American Cancer Society.

Matt Beck, a Glenelg resident and rising junior at River Hill High School, has worked hard over the past school year to raise money for Relay for Life. Matt participated in the Howard County Relay for Life, which took place on June 6-7 at Hammond High School. Matt has the distinction of being the top individual fundraiser for that event. He raised $5,550. How you may ask? Matt has been busy baking over the past months. Making gourment cookies, he would provide a dozen to anyone who would donate $25 for his cause.

Matt has thoroughly enjoyed this fundraising experience, and plans to continue his fundraising efforts for next year’s Relay for Life. Matt’s goal is to double the contributions he received this year, so he hopes to raise over $11,000 in 2009. He will begin his fundraising in August, again with sales of his gourmet cookies.

To meet his goal, Matt will need to bake almost 450 dozen cookies! Keep an eye on this column for information about where and when you can purchase Matt’s cookies.

Just like at any sporting event, concessions will be provided, such as hot pretzels, popcorn and nachos. Registration is requested and the cost is $3 per person.

Changing of the Guard

The kids are out of school for the summer and with it brings news of changes at some local schools. Each year, parents anticipate which teachers will be coming back to school to teach next year and which teachers will be moved to other schools. Last week, it was news of changes in many local school administrations that was on parents’ minds.

Rick Wilson, current principal at Glenwood Middle School announced that he will become principal at Folly Quarter Middle School next year. Dave Brown, current principal at Mt. Hebron High School will be taking Rick’s place.

As Wilson steps in to take charge at Folly Quarter, Carl Perkins will be moving on to become principal at Centennial High School. Over at Triadelphia Ridge Elementary, Susan Webster, who has been principal since the school opened in 1998, will now become principal at Waterloo Elementary School. Taking her place will be current assistant principal Chanel Morris. These changes all take effect July 1. We welcome the new principals and wish each of these individuals great success in their new endeavors.
