Peach season has finally arrived and will continue until early September. With 12 different varieties to choose from, there is sure to be a peach for every taste. Stop by Larriland Farm in Woodbine, Baugher Orchards, in Ellicott City, Harbin’s Roadside Farm Market, in Marriottsville, or the Glenwood Library Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings to get your fresh peaches.
Speaking of peaches, this week before the Howard County Fair is a busy one for many households across the county, as residents are busy putting the final touches on items to be entered into the Fair. While some projects are worked on throughout the year, baked goods need to be fresh, so are prepared in the week leading up to the fair.
This is always a busy time at the Ennis house, where they have a baking frenzy – making a variety of baked goods to be entered by star bakers Clara and Claudia. On one hot afternoon, the air-conditioning in the house was not working, but the baking had to go on. Ron-Air saved the day, as they sent someone out who got the air running again.
Larry Ennis stopped by our house to share some of the leftovers of the girls’ baking – a peach pudding – yum! If prize-winning home made goodies are a tempting treat you would like to have, make sure to stop by the Howard County Fair Bake Sale, Sunday, Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. This is an opportunity to purchase champion and blue-ribbon confections created by local youth, as they learn about working in the kitchen.
My family travelled to Montana – Glacier National Park to be exact – in mid-July. We loved the day hikes through the park and the beautiful mountain scenery. My kids thought it was fun to find snow and have a snowball fight in July, as we travelled to heights close to 9,000 feet high. One evening we stayed in the Swift Current Motor Inn.
Why am I sharing this you wonder? Because, that evening my daughter came back from browsing in the gift shop to share that she saw someone in the gift shop wearing a Western Howard County Soccer T-shirt. She was too shy to say something to them, so I will never know who it was, but it was neat to know that one of my country ‘neighbors’ was also visiting the park at the same time.
If you were in Montana in mid-July, write in and let me know!
The Glenwood Middle School PTSA still needs to fill the following positions on their board: cultural arts, public relations, volunteer coordinator, hospitality and parent volunteer for the eighth grade. These are worthwhile programs. The positions can be shared as well. Please consider chairing one of these committees. If you are interested our would like more information, e-mail Bose Abu at abumd@aol.com or call 301-854-4910.
As the calendar turned to the month of July, parents at Glenwood and Folly Quarter Middle Schools were greeted with e-mails from the new principals at each of these schools, Dave Brown and Rick Wilson, respectively.
Each principal first thanked the former principals for their assistance in the transition to a new post, and wished the former principals well in their new positions. Each of the principals will be working with PTA members to help foster a strong parent-school connection.
To that end, each school has scheduled meet and greet sessions – an opportunity for the community to come and meet the new principals and get to know a bit about them.
Glenwood Middle School will be conducting two sessions. The first one will be Tuesday, July 29 and a second will take place Aug. 20. Both sessions will begin at 7 p.m. Folly Quarter Middle School will hold its meet-and-greet session Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m.
Are the teenagers getting bored hanging out around the house this summer? The Glenwood Community Center has a Teen Scene Movie event planned for this Friday, July 25 from 9-11 p.m.
Teens are invited to come watch a free viewing of “Transformers” outside under the stars in the grassy area behind the community center. Bring a blanket or chair, and come hang out with friends, catching up on the summer news. Light refreshments will be available for a fee.
