This fall marks the 45th season for the Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Glenwood resident Angelo Gatto. The Orchestra, along with the Maryland Youth Preparatory Orchestra, conducted by Thomas Cheezum, will hold new member auditions Aug. 16 and 23 and Sept. 6 and 13 at the Community College of Baltimore County–Catonsville, in the Fine and Performing Arts Building, Room Q121.
Orchestra and audition information is available on the orchestra’s Web site, www.myso.info or call 410-442-5645. In celebration of their 45th season, the MYSO is currently planning a concert tour of Northern Italy in June 2009.
It is hard to believe that summer vacation is half over and with the turn of the calendar, it is already August! Where has the summer gone? For many youth in our area, the weeks have flown by as they have been getting ready for the annual Howard County Fair.
The fair began Aug. 2 and runs through this weekend, Aug. 9. My family always looks forward to this time. The kids get to show off the fruits of their labor after working the past year raising animals and vegetables, as well as honing their baking, home arts and photography skills. It is now time to see what the judges will think.
We all look forward to visiting with friends we may see only a few times a year. It is also fun to walk through the buildings and look for entries by local neighbors. For a 4-Her, all of their work culminates with the Livestock Sale, to be held on Friday, Aug. 8 at 6:15 p.m The evening will begin with the sale of broilers, rabbits and capons, followed by market hogs, steers, meat goats and market lambs.
Some have concerns about the economy this year, however, supporting the Howard County Fair Livestock Sale is a great way to spend your money, supporting local youth and receiving a quality product in return. The 4-H’ers who are selling their animals have worked hard to take good care of their animals before the fair, providing exercise, fresh water, and grain daily. The meat you will purchase is locally grown and hormone free. 4-H is a positive youth program which teaches youth life skills, such as record keeping and money management, it also teaches them the responsibility of taking care of animals, and provides them with experiences they will never forget. Purchases made at the Livestock Sale may be tax deductible.
Your support will help to fund future 4-H projects, as well as first cars and college educations. If you would like more information about the Howard County Fair 4-H Livestock Sale, call Livestock Sale Committee Members Theresa Bly at 301-829-2498 or Larry Bresnock at 410-635-6929.
For more information about the fair or a schedule of events, go to the Howard County Fair’s Web site at www.howardcountyfair.org.
Still looking for a good summer read for your daughter? Why not join in the reading and discussion presented monthly by the Glenwood Branch Library’s Mother-Daughter Book Club?
On Wednesday, Aug. 13, the group will be meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. to discuss “Our Only May Amelia,” by Jennifer Holm. Refreshments will be served.
This is a great way to get involved in reading with your daughter. Stop by the local library branch to check out this book. To register or for additional information, call the library at 410-313-5577.
Peach season has finally arrived and will continue until early September. With 12 different varieties to choose from, there is sure to be a peach for every taste. Stop by Larriland Farm in Woodbine, Baugher Orchards, in Ellicott City, Harbin’s Roadside Farm Market, in Marriottsville, or the Glenwood Library Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings to get your fresh peaches.
Speaking of peaches, this week before the Howard County Fair is a busy one for many households across the county, as residents are busy putting the final touches on items to be entered into the Fair. While some projects are worked on throughout the year, baked goods need to be fresh, so are prepared in the week leading up to the fair.
This is always a busy time at the Ennis house, where they have a baking frenzy – making a variety of baked goods to be entered by star bakers Clara and Claudia. On one hot afternoon, the air-conditioning in the house was not working, but the baking had to go on. Ron-Air saved the day, as they sent someone out who got the air running again.
Larry Ennis stopped by our house to share some of the leftovers of the girls’ baking – a peach pudding – yum! If prize-winning home made goodies are a tempting treat you would like to have, make sure to stop by the Howard County Fair Bake Sale, Sunday, Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. This is an opportunity to purchase champion and blue-ribbon confections created by local youth, as they learn about working in the kitchen.
My family travelled to Montana – Glacier National Park to be exact – in mid-July. We loved the day hikes through the park and the beautiful mountain scenery. My kids thought it was fun to find snow and have a snowball fight in July, as we travelled to heights close to 9,000 feet high. One evening we stayed in the Swift Current Motor Inn.
Why am I sharing this you wonder? Because, that evening my daughter came back from browsing in the gift shop to share that she saw someone in the gift shop wearing a Western Howard County Soccer T-shirt. She was too shy to say something to them, so I will never know who it was, but it was neat to know that one of my country ‘neighbors’ was also visiting the park at the same time.
If you were in Montana in mid-July, write in and let me know!
