In an effort to raise awareness about the importance of saving money, especially during these troubled economic times, Governor Martin O’Malley has proclaimed Feb. 23-March 7 “Maryland Saves Weeks,” part of the larger “America Saves” initiative.

During the designated time period, the “2009 Roll in the Dough Savings Campaign” provides Marylanders with an additional incentive to save. Visit any of the 52 participating locations in Maryland, Pennsylvania, DC or Virginia to open a savings account or deposit money into an existing account and receive a chance to win a $1,000 certificate of deposit, or one of eight $100 CDs. Winners will be drawn randomly on April 15 at the American Savings Education Council meeting in Washington.

Although the list of participating locations has not yet been posted as of this writing, it will ultimately appear at www.maryland-saves.org, or contact campaign chairwoman Joan Lok at jlok@fdic.gov or 410-872-9024, Ext. 4032 for more information. Go to www.americasaves.org for details about the national initiative.

Neighbor Ride Seeks Volunteer Drivers

By Cassie Felch
Posted: February 6, 2009

Colleen Konstanzer, Community Outreach Coordinator for Neighbor Ride, would like to remind the community that Valentine’s Day is the ideal occasion to “do something sweet” for an older resident. Neighbor Ride, a volunteer-based transportation service, continually seeks new drivers to help Howard County seniors remain active and independent. Since volunteers may choose to provide rides that are convenient to their own locations and schedules, they provide big benefits to others at little financial cost to themselves.

To learn more about this rewarding opportunity, call Volunteer Coordinator Rosemary Noble at 410-884-RIDE (7433) or e-mail volunteer@neighborride.org.

Local Churches Offer Shrove Tuesday Pancake Suppers

By Cassie Felch
Posted: February 6, 2009

This year, Shrove Tuesday (also known as Fat Tuesday in New Orleans) falls on Feb. 24. ‘Shrove’ is the past tense of ‘shrive,’ which means to confess one’s sins. Historically, this holiday marked the final time to consume perishables like meat, milk, eggs and butter prior to the 40-day Lenten fasting period. The pancake supper arose as a means of using up these forbidden foodstuffs.

Two local churches invite the community to their Shrove Tuesday pancake suppers. St. James United Methodist, at 12470 Frederick Road in Marriottsville, will serve pancakes, sausage, baked apples and beverages from 5-7 p.m. The youth of the church will accept a love offering to help support their annual mission trip to Camp Hope in western Maryland, where they will perform home repair for those in need. Call the church office at 410-442-2020 with any questions.

Glenelg United Methodist, at 13900 Burntwoods Road in Glenelg, will serve its free supper from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The menu includes pancakes, bacon, and other assorted breakfast dishes. For more information, call the church office at 410-489-7260.
