With River Hill’s Anna Demaree closing out her freshman year on the track with a pair of second place finishes (800- and 1,600-meter runs) and a third (3,200) at the state championships last week, people are already expecting big things from the Hawks’ distance specialist in the years to come. She’s already drawing comparisons to some of the best cross country and track stars to come out of the county.
With that in mind, here’s a look back at what Atholton’s Alison Smith, who graduated last spring with eight outdoor track state titles to her name, did as a freshman, alongside Demaree’s post-season this spring.
Smith: County Championship: Won the 1,600 (5:18.00), 3,200 (11:56.42) and was a part of the winning 4×800 relay squad. Regionals: Won the 1,600 (5:12.70) and was third in the 800 (2:23.41). States: Won the 1,600 (5:06.40) and was fourth in the 800 (2:20.57).
Demaree: County Championship: Won the 800 (2:23.39), 1,600 (5:12.58) and 3,200 (11:36.72), while also running as part of the winning 4×800 relay squad. Regionals: Won the 800 (2:22.18) and 1,600 (5:17.82), in addition to finishing second in the 3,200 (11:25.31). States: Finished second in the 800 (2:19.76) and 1,600 (5:07.70), while placing third in the 3,200 (11:20.06).
