Good sportsmanship — pass it on!

There are those who talk about good sportsmanship and those who practice it. Put the Wilde Lake girls lacrosse program in the latter category.

The City College girls team had just 10 players for a first-round playoff game at Wilde Lake on May 8. It only took Wilde Lake coach Mike Harrison a few moments to make his decision: Wilde Lake would also play with 10, two less than normal.

“It was the right thing to do,” he said.

City coach Kendra Ausby thought she would have 12 players to face Wilde Lake, and did not ask the Wildecats to play short.

“It’s a nice thing that Wilde Lake did, but in the lacrosse world, that’s what we do. We pride ourselves on respect for the game,” she said.

Harrison said you never know when good sportsmanship will come back around. Wilde Lake’s second-round playoff game was originally slated for 7 p.m., May 10 at Centennial. Because of a music performance, the Wildecats would have only had 12 players and no goalkeeper. Centennial agreed to move the game to 1 p.m.
