Lots of Locks - all for Love

Young Shannon Blee, a fifth-grade student at St. Louis School, has beautiful hair and a beautiful heart. The swimming team champ and all around great kid had the idea, like many of her peers, to donate her long tresses to the Locks of Love organization. The nonprofit makes wigs for children with health problems from the donated hair the organization receives.

Shannon came to Studio 10, in Glenelg, June 27 and gladly allowed stylist Christina Bower to shear her long hair into a shorn off braid suitable for mailing to the Locks of Love organization.

The sweet youngster was accompanied by her mother, Jan Blee, who said she was delighted to have her daughter participate in such a worthy cause.

Ripe for the Pickin’

By Lisa Peklo

The Moore family has run a “pick your own” farm operation out in Woodbine since 1973. Every year, families trek out to Larriland Farm for fresh fruits and vegetables and a lovely country ride.

This season is no different. Currently the farm is offering fields of fresh black raspberries and red raspberries, all ripe for the pickin’. In addition to the pick your own opportunities, the family run place has an on-site farm market too. With gas prices keeping more and more folks close to home, a trip out to Larriland may be just the family outing you’ve been looking for. For more information, go to the Web site at www.pickyourown.com or call the farm at 410-442-2605.

Bargains over the Bridge

This weekend’s best bets include a trip just over the Patapsco Bridge in Sykesville to the Apple Butter Market Flea Market.

The flea market will be held on the last Sunday of each month and this month it is set for June 29, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The grounds of the old Apple Butter Warehouse in Sykesville are the backdrop for dozens of vendors selling produce, flea market finds, vintage books and jewelry, crafted items and all sorts of collectibles.

Generally, there is some sort of fun entertainment, like roving actors or clowns handing out balloons. It’s a terrific Sunday morning after church stop and families roam the stalls with ease. The Apple Butter factory is just off of Route 32 as one meanders down into Sykesville. Don’t miss this innovative event.

Million-Dollar Smiles

Our local dentist, Tom Fenlon, is involved in a wonderful dental promotion which runs through the end of June. Community Service is at the core of the promotion in which Dr. Fenlon will donate all proceeds from any whitening service to the “Smiles for Life” organization.

This win-win program is meant to brighten the smile of the participant while in turn brighten the life of a child through Fenlon’s donation to “Smiles for Life.” He is participating in the program as a member of the Crown Council, an alliance of leading-edge dental teams in the United States and Canada.

If you’d like to learn more about Dr. Fenlon’s whitening offer, drop by the office in the West Friendship Neighborhood Center or give a call to the office at 410-442-2800 to schedule your appointment. Don’t wait too long, as the promotion only runs until the end of June.
