Apple Butter Flea Market this Sunday

The best bargain hunting grounds in Howard County are alive and well. Did you realize that the large brick warehouse building just over the Patapsco bridge in Sykesville was at one time an apple butter factory? Thanks to the clever innovations of The Apple Butter Market founder Melissa Delbusso, the grounds of the old apple butter factory are currently the site of a monthly outdoor flea market.

Don’t forget to visit the Apple Butter Flea Market in Sykesville Sunday, Aug. 31. The flea and farmers market is held on the grounds of the former Apple Butter Factory.

An early morning quickie thunderstorm on the last Sunday in July didn’t deter the hundreds of visitors who enjoyed homegrown berries, Asiatic lilies, local peaches, antiques, home made soaps and sachets, collectibles and vintage jewelry, just a few of the goodies being sold.

Two stalwart fans of the market are Karen Thompson Macginnis and her daughter, Laura. The duo are always on the prowl for handbags, vintage or designer.

Karen is a hoot and loves to reminisce about the days when her dad Murl was a bus driver for many of the West Friendship Elementary students of the 1970s and early 1980s. Sykesville’s popular year-old Sunday flea market series, continues this summer with this weekend’s market set for Sunday, Aug. 31, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Vendors include a watercolor artist, many stalls of fresh farm produce, a seller of vintage jewelry, flea market stalls, crafted items and collectibles as well as vintage books and ephemera.

Follow up flea market days will be held on the last Sunday of each month including Sept. 28 and Oct. 26. Town planners hope to see the flea market eventually move indoors as a permanent year round venue.

Questions about the flea market? Call the Town of Sykesville office at 410-795-8959.

Penny Jones, who has been the hub of things at West Friendship for more than 16 years now, reminds the community that West Friendship Elementary has been designated as a Green School.

One of the first ecologically friendly items on the school calendar is a resolution to reduce paper consumption. The school Web site is wfes.hcpss.org. Parents and community members are also encouraged to register at www.eSchoolNewsletter.com for receipt of important school news by e-mail.
