The Maryland Committee for the Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve has nominated the Baltimore Aircoil Company, in Jessup, and Summitt Solutions, in Ellicott City, for the 2008 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, which, given by the Secretary of Defense, is the highest recognition given to employers for exceptional support of their employees serving in the Guard and Reserve. This year's award will be presented on Sept. 18 in Washington, D.C. In addition, George Doetsch, chairman of the Maryland ESGR Committee has selected both companies as recipients of the Pro Patria Award, the highest state-level award given to employers. This award will be presented on June 26 at the Crown Plaza Hotel, in Timonium.

State Farm has awarded Neighbor Ride, a volunteer-based nonprofit in Howard County, $2,5000 through State Farm's Good Neighbor Citizenship Grant Program.

Howard County Executive Kenneth Ulman and the Office of Children's Services honored individuals and programs that have made a difference in the lives of children, at the annual Celebrating Successes for Children ceremony. The ceremony recognized the contributions and dedication of 84 honorees, including child care providers, speech therapists, scout leaders, coaches, students and community education programs. Howard County category winners included: Ann Sweeney, a special educator with the Howard County Public Schools' Infants and Toddlers program, Infants and Toddlers Category; Edvina Gill, a teacher at Columbia Montessori, Preschool Category; Kevin McDuffie, coach at Howard High School, who has led his varsity basketball players in a volunteer reading program at Phelps Luck Elementary School, Kindergarten-fifth Grade Category; Irene Bademosi, guidance counselor at Mt. Hebron High School, Sixth-12 Grade Category; Alex Dunbar, a Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, summer camp counselor and school volunteer, Mixed Age Group; Brian Daugherty, a high school junior who speaks to local groups about mental illness, Outstanding Youth; Dan Harris, general manager of the AMC Columbia Theater and Marianne Ross, a parent advocate who together created a Special Needs Movie Night, Family Friendly Business; and Theodore A. Ferguson Sr., a leader in the Gator African American Parents Program that serves Reservoir High School, O'Donnell Family Award.

State Farm has awarded NeighbCentennial High School principal Scott Pfeifer is joining the Maryland State Department of Education to head its high school assessment and reform efforts. Pfeifer replaces Daniel Cunningham, who has been head of the Instructional Assessment Office for 18 months. Cunningham is retiring after 33 years in Maryland public education and joining the staff of the College Board.

William Morgan, an Ameriprise financial adviser whose office is in Ellicott City, has earned the company's status of being an Ameriprise private wealth adviser. Morgan is one of more than 10,000 Ameriprise financial advisers to achieve the qualifications needed to become a private wealth advisory practice within the company.

Hugh Gregory Jr., an Ellicott City physician and division head of rehabilitative medicine and medical director of the Rehabilitation Center at Maryland General Hospital, is the recipient of two awards, Excellence in Customer Service and Top Admitter.

The Horizon Foundation has announced the winners of the Fifth Annual Horizon Foundation Awards: Robert Duggan, co-founder and president of Tai Sophia Institute in Laurel, the Richard G. McCauley Leadership Award; Howard Community College, the Health Education Award (to be accepted on behalf of the college by Sharon Pierce, college health services chairwoman); Leadership U, the Connections Asset Development Award (to be accepted on behalf of the organization by Krysta Huxford, youth program director; and Margaret Browning, anti-smoking advocate and cancer survivor, the Community Appreciation Award.

Judy Templeton, clinical supervisor of Family and Children's Services' Healthy Families Howard County program, has won Soroptomist International of Howard County's 2008 Making a Difference for Women Award. The award honors women who have made extraordinary differences in the lives of other women through their work or volunteer activities.

Christina Wanex, of Ellicott City, has earned top honors in Tia Sophia's Excellent Beginnings Program Achievers, for her sales accomplishments and professionalism.

William Driscoll, of Ellicott City, has been promoted to administrative vice president and regional manager of private client services for the greater Washington region and product manager for private banking for the M&T Bank franchise. Driscoll will be responsible for expanding M&T's private client services, which include financial planning, fiduciary services, investment management, employee benefits, institutional investment management/custody, insurance and private banking.

The Arc of Howard County recognized seven individuals and one organization at its the second annual Volunteer Appreciation Social: Nancy Rhead, Lifetime Achievement Award; Annette Hinkle, Outstanding Volunteer of the Year; Ryan Griffin, Outstanding Student Volunteer; Christa Spalding, Outstanding Community Volunteer; Sheila Greenfield, Outstanding Special Event Volunteer; Phil Kiracofe, Outstanding Individual Volunteer; Carole MacPhee, Outstanding Partnership Award, and Bon Secours Baltimore Health System, Outstanding Volunteer Outreach Organization.

The Wayside Inn Bed & Breakfast, in Ellicott City, has been admitted to the Select Registry, Distinguished Inns of North America. The Wayside Inn joins more than 400 other properties as members of the Association.

We Promote Health, a new nonprofit organization in Howard County, has appointed Melba Phipps executive director. She helped to shape the organization and was also instrumental in organizing Healthy Howard Day, which was held June 1 at Centennial Park. Phipps is a resident of Howard County.

The American Heart Association has honored County Executive Kenneth Ulman with its "Maryland Public Official Award," The award recognizes Ulman as a champion for public health and notes his contributions to reduce heart disease and stroke through his on-going support of Howard County's Clean Indoor Air Act.

Joe Graham, of Ellicott City and rehabilitation manager at Riderwood, an Erickson full-service retirement community, has been selected as Riderwood's "Manager of the Year" for 2007. He has been an employee there for two years.

Christopher McCabe, of Ellicott City, has been appointed vice president of development for the Howard Hospital Foundation.

The Arc of Howard County recently presented awards to the following individuals and groups that have provided innovative programs and opportunities for people with cognitive and developmental disabilities in typical settings: Chuck Spalding, a coach at Long Reach High School, Celebration of Excellence Award for 2008; Miguel Albornoz, Centennial High School graduate, Celebration of Excellence Award for 2008; Marie Adams, nurse at the Developmental Disabilities Administration, Celebration of Excellence Award for 2008, and Robert Bussard and David Gold, self advocates who were recognized for their success in living a full community life. The Office of Human Resources of the Howard County Board of Education, Grace Episcopal Church, the third grade team at Elkridge Elementary School and the Savage Volunteer Fire Company were also honored.

The Howard County Chamber of Commerce has launched a new Web site (www.howardchamber.com) that features streamlined navigation for easier access to the member directory, calendar of events and popular committee pages, such as the Government Affairs Committee page, where visitors can access Chamber policies. The Chamber tailored the site to meet the needs of its members.

The Howard County law firm, Reese & Carney LLP, has received the Award of Excellence from the Bar Foundation of Howard County at the foundation's luncheon held at Victoria Gastro Pub on June 9. The award recognizes the firm's 30 years of contributions to the legal profession and the Howard County community.

Dr. Artin A. Shoukas, a Howard County resident, has been reappointed as an associate team leader for the Cardiovascular Alterations Team of the National Space Biomedical Research Institute, in Houston. Shoukas, a professor of biomedical engineering, physiology, and anesthesia and critical-care medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, is entering his third term.

Howard County has been honored by Forbes magazine as one of America's "Best Places to Raise a Family," in the June 30 edition of the publication. Howard is the only Maryland county to receive this honor.
