Ellicott City resident M.J. Tooey, MLS, AHIP, executive director of the Health Sciences and Human Services Library at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, has been honored as a Fellow of the Medical Library Association. MLA Fellows are elected by the board of directors in recognition of their sustained and outstanding contributions to health sciences librarianship and to the advancement of the purposes of MLA. The honor recognizes Tooey's contributions to the organization and health sciences librarianship.

Baltimore Gas and Electric Company, a subsidiary of Constellation Energy, announced recently that two employees from Howard County will receive Black Engineer of the Year Awards during the annual BEYA Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Global Competitiveness Conference.

Glenelg resident Jeannette M. Mills, senior vice president, customer relations and account services and recipient of the Pioneer award, has been with BGE for 20 years. Mills oversees areas that deal directly with customers, including new construction, contact center, billing and related services.

Ellicott City resident Da'Janel Roberts, senior engineer and recipient of the Modern Day Technology Leaders award, joined BGE in 2005 as an associate engineer in the Reliability and Maintenance Planning unit. Roberts currently oversees the relocation of electric equipment to accommodate local and state transportation projects.

First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ellicott City is welcoming its new senior pastor, the Reverend Dr. Eugene Kern. He was installed on Sunday, Feb. 22.

Kern is a graduate of Erskine College in Due West, S.C. and the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, S.C., also his home town. He earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Drew University. Ordained in 1979, he has served churches in South Carolina and Florida. He also served as assistant to the bishop in the Florida-Bahamas Synod.

Kern and his wife, Jackie, have two children; a son, the Rev. Travis Kern and his wife, Heidi , of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and a daughter, Kimberly, a graphic designer in Orlando, Fla.

First Evangelical Lutheran Church is located at 3604 Chatham Road, Ellicott City. Sunday worship services are held at 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. with Sunday School at 10:00 a.m.

The Technology Education Association of Maryland (TEAM) announced that Howard County high school teacher Roy Rosnik has been selected to receive the association's High School Teacher Excellence Award for 2009. w

The award recognizes a high school teacher in Maryland who best demonstrates excellence in technology education.

Rosnik, a technology education teacher at Marriotts Ridge High School, is an experienced, innovative educator who introduced Project Lead The Way in Howard County. He has helped develop and implement county curricula for technology education and computer science.

Rosnik is a two-term past president of TEAM and a strong collaborator and proponent of best educational practices. While serving as the association's Professional Development chair, he helped many colleagues create cross-curricular lessons and helped prepare business education teachers to teach technology education courses.

Rosnik was recognized at the TEAM Donald Maley Awards reception on Wed., Feb. 18, at the Carroll County Career and Technology Center in Westminster. As the Maryland award winner, he will represent the state at the 2009 International Technology Education Association Conference in Louisville, Ky., on March 27.
