Members of the Laurel Leader staff won several awards at the 2008 Editorial Contest sponsored by the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association.

In the category for nondaily newspapers with a circulation of more than 20,000, Leader reporter Dan Schwind won second place for general news stories for his cover story, "Slots or Not," which gave both sides of the slots referendum in the November 2008 elections.

Staff photographer Matt Roth won first place for spot news photos for his shot of a police officer on the scene during the investigation of the death of Prince George's Police officer Sgt. Richard Findley in South Laurel in June.

In the category for non-dailies with a circulation under 10,000, Leader sports editor David Driver won first place for sports features for "Mountain of Ambition," a look inside summer leagues, which appeared in the Carroll Eagle.
