Howard Community College alumnus Paul Hajek has been recognized as the 2009 "Distinguished Alumnus of the Year," joining an elite group of HCC alumni honored for their exceptional professional and personal achievements. Hajek was recognized for his achievement at HCC's 2009 Commencement Ceremony.

Hajek earned an associate's degree from HCC in 1987 and a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. After 25 years, Hajek retired from the Howard County Police Department. Hajek currently provides program coordination and instruction in leadership, management, emergency preparedness and homeland security for the Executive Development Institute at the Maryland Police and Correctional Training commissions.

Adam Boarman, of Slater Associates Inc., has passed the Landscape Architecture Registration Exam and become a registered landscape architect with the state of Maryland. Boarman, a Penn State alum, has been employed by the Columbia-based firm since 2005. Over that time, he has been involved with the design of numerous parks, plazas, and campus improvements including a proposed $2.5 million park in downtown Ocean City.
