Colette Roberts, co-founder and chairwoman of the Howard County chapter of PFLAG -- Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays -- announced that she is stepping down from the post she has held for the entire 15 years the chapter has been in existence. Her resignation is effective Jan. 1.
Under Roberts' leadership, the chapter grew not only in size but also in the impact it had on the lives of those Howard County families who have struggled with coming to terms with a family member who is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered.
As the principal contact for the chapter, Roberts periodically received phone calls from parents and family members in distress, and through patience and understanding, she was able to avert a serious crisis in most instances.
Pat English, the mother of a gay son and currently the chapter's membership chairwoman, will succeed Roberts as chapter chairwoman.
