Joan Driessen has joined The Association of Community Services as its new education and training coordinator. In her new position, Driessen will be responsible for ACS' training programs, including ACS' annual conference. She will also coordinate many of ACS' monthly general meetings.
Atlantic Industrial Inc., based in Columbia, has been acquired by The Brock Group, an international provider of specialty services based in Houston. Atlantic's operating subsidiaries, Atlantic Scaffolding and Atlantic Plant Services, will continue under the leadership of Craig Kaple and Darryl Schimeck, who will report to Michael McGinnis, president of The Brock Group.
Howard Community College has been selected as the only Maryland recipient of a grant from the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland to begin a new program, Startalk, aimed at increasing the number of Americans learning critical need languages.

Rosa M. Scharf, senior vice president of Howard Bank, has been named one of Maryland's Top 100 Women for 2008 by The Daily Record. With more than 20 years of commercial lending experience, Scharf joined Howard Bank in 2004, as a vice president and relationship manager.
Merkle, a database marketing agency, has relocated its corporate headquarters to Columbia Gateway corporate business park. A recent hiring initiative and the addition of many new Fortune 1000 clients were the primary reasons behind the company's relocation from Lanham. The new headquarters was developed and constructed by Manekin.
The Wayside Inn Bed & Breakfast, in Ellicott City, has been named one of Select Registry's Distinguished Inns of North America. The Wayside Inn joins more than 400 other properties as members of the association.
