Even though the Howard County Fair is over for another year, I'd still like to acknowledge some of our neighbors who were so supportive of the 4-H program. This year, there were 30 to 40 new buyers who registered for the livestock auction. Among them were Lenny's Towing, Haussler and Associates and Zepp Plumbing and Heat, who were involved in some lively bidding for 11-year-old Brian Loveless' pig.

Lenny's Towing were the proud winners of Brian's pig. Ed and Beth Halley, who are very active members of our Woodbine community were also new buyers.

I'd like to recognize Kevin Smith of Marathon Power for his support of the 4-H program. Kevin bought several pigs, including Billy Loveless' swine.

Not only did he purchase several pigs; but he also donated one back to the 4-H program to resell. For many years, Kevin has provided the Poplar 4-H Club with a huge tractor to pull the club's float in the fair parade.

This year, Kevin did not have a tractor for the club's use; so he made arrangements with one of his customers, Jim Ferguson. Jim very graciously cleaned up his tractor and brought it to the fairgrounds for the club's use.

I can't thank everyone in the Woodbine community enough for all the work and support of the 4-H program. As you know, I'm a big supporter of 4-H because it teaches life skills for our future leaders. If you have a child, ages 5-17 who would be interested in finding out more about 4-H, contact me. Our club would love to have new members. We are especially interested in the little ones, who will start young and grow up in 4-H.

Members of the Lisbon United Methodist Church are celebrating the birth of many grandchildren this year. Nancy and Mitch Mitchell welcomed a new grandson, Lucas. Joyce and David Laws' family increased by three with the births of Ava, Hannah, and Campbell. Kerry and Phil Greenstreet welcomed a third granddaughter, Katelynn. Pat and Gene Winters also increased their family by three with the births of Emma, Alexandra and Delaney.

I've noticed that the mornings are getting a little cooler these days. Summer will be coming to an end soon, and the cold weather will be upon us. Last year, my heating bills were out of sight.

Here are some tips from Misty McNally on saving energy. One, many electronics use energy even when you're not using them. For instance, battery chargers, TVs and computers use standby power. Disconnecting them will save up to 7 percent in home energy consumption. Two, purchase Energy Star computers, appliances and power adaptors, as they consume half the electricity that standard models consume. Three, reduce the number of telephones.
