The following Columbia residents graduated from Central Michigan University in May 2008: Alexandra Maggio (doctorate in audiology), Owen McCarthy, Erika Swindell and Jocelyn Williams (all master's of science administration).

Keshia Butts, of Columbia and daughter of Vickey and Ronald Butts, was inducted as a member of the Legal Eagles, the student community of the Department of Justice, Law and Society at American University.

Mary Anderson, a student at Howard Community College, was awarded the $1000 Marie Bowers Kindheart Foundation scholarship. The award is given to students based on an essay about leading a kindhearted life and a recommendation from a teacher.
