Are you a fan of the TV show "Survivor?" If so, you may be interested to know that Ethan Zohn, winner of "Survivor: Africa" (from 2001) will be visiting Glenelg High School Friday, Nov. 21. Ethan left Boston Aug. 20 leading a 500-mile Dribble Campaign (with a soccer ball) that will end Dec. 1 in Washington for World AIDS Day 2008.

Zohn will be at Glenelg High School in the media center from 2:45 to 4 p.m. Glenelg High School Key Club President Brad Carpenter got the idea to invite Zohn to stop by the school when he learned that his Grassroots Soccer Campaign would be traveling through Clarksville. While at Glenelg, Zohn will be sharing the story of the Grassroots Soccer Campaign he has started in Africa.

The Grassroots Soccer mission is to use the power of soccer in the fight against AIDS. Grassroot Soccer provides African youth with the knowledge, skills and support to live HIV-free.

To support this mission the Glenelg High School Key Club will be hosting a Loose the Shoes event in December, for more information log on to www.freewebs.com/glenelgkeyclub. The GHS Key Club hopes to see everyone there.

Be sure to stop by the Glenwood Branch Library sometime before the end of the month to view some special artwork. Bushy Park Elementary School is excited that the library will be showcasing the 50+ original and imaginative art entries created by students for the 2008 National PTA Reflections Program. This year's theme was simply "WOW."

Come view the students interpretations of this subject through paintings, poems, stories, photographs, songs, films and dances. The display, which will run Nov. 21-29 and is free and open to the public during regular library hours. Some of these pieces will be selected to move on to county and state judging.

The Glenelg High School Marching Unit is now holding their holiday citrus fruit sale. This month they are offering pink grapefruit, navel oranges, tangerines and a variety pack. Orders are due by Wednesday, Nov. 26 for fruit to be picked up at Glenelg High School Dec. 13.

You may recall that I shared news at the end of October about Clarksville dentist Dr. Rashmi Parmar holding a Treats for Troops event Nov. 1. This was an opportunity for children to bring their Halloween candy for a "buy-back" event, with the candy then being sent to the troops.

I recently had a follow-up report from Dr. Parmar's office, and the day was a great success! Dr. Parmar would like to extend a great big "Thank You!" to everyone in the community who participated in the Treats for Troops event. Thanks to community support, more than 200 pounds of candy was collected and shipped to our troops through Operation Home Front.

With such an overwhelming response, there was even enough candy to share some with the Local USO BWI Lounge, that serves soldiers being deployed or are coming home.

Dr. Parmar shares that seeing the community come together and reach out to honor the soldiers serving our country was an incredible experience. The children who shared their candy should feel very proud of their efforts.

In addition to the candy, children also had the opportunity to make cards to send to the soldiers. This was also a great time for these children to learn about good oral health.

Thanks again to all who participated in this event, Dr. Parmar is very proud and honored to work in such a generous community.

Don't forget to stop by the Glenwood Community Center Saturday, Nov. 22 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The center will be hosting a second weekend of their holiday vendor fair. There will be new vendors present this weekend, so whether or not you also attended the event last weekend, there will be new things to see. The event is free for shoppers.
