Calling all county 4-H'ers! Do you need something interesting to do over our long winter break this year? Parents, will your kids need to get out of the house for a day? (Will you need them to get out of the house?)

Well, Howard County 4-H is trying something new this year. A Craft Day is being planned for Dec. 29 and there will be something for just about anybody.

There will be 16 different craft sessions from which to choose. Each person will select four sessions, each session will be 1 to 1 1/2 hours long. The day's activities will begin at 9 a.m. and go to 3:30 p.m., with lunch and snacks provided. Clovers (5-7 year olds) will be invited to attend during the morning sessions. The cost of entire day's activities and food is $20.

What type of crafts are planned, you might ask? The list begins with assembling and decorating airplanes. To embellish your home, there is decorative door hangers, table top snowmen, snowflake ornaments, crocheting and fabric décor.

Looking ahead toward the new year, 4-H'ers will have the opportunity to make a 2009 painted calendar, a popsicle stick barrel bank in which to save those monetary gifts, and birdhouses for this spring's songbirds.

Need a gift for mom, grandmom, or that favorite aunt next year? How about making some jewelry, a mosiac trivet or a bouquet of paper flowers? Lastly, you could make a no-sew pillow for yourself to rest on through those long winter nights when you just want to curl up with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate.

The various crafts will be taught by 4-H volunteers, both adults and senior 4-H members, and by the 4-H Extension Educator Sheryl Burdette and 4-H Program Assistant Chris Rein. The event will be held at the Howard County Fairgrounds, in West Friendship.

4-H families, watch for registration forms coming to your mailbox within the next week. The event sounds like a lot of fun and not too expensive...an important consideration in these trying economic times. I bet some of these crafts may turn up next August at the fair. I'll be looking for them.
