I'm sitting here in my living room, on a cold and rainy winter night, preparing to write a short blurb about summer camp. I find this amusing. It may seem way too early to even start thinking about summer camps but this will give you some ideas when it comes time for you to apply for one or more.

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will be hosting a Summer Camp Fair at the Glenwood Community Center, 2400 Route 97 in Cooksville. It's planned for Saturday, Feb. 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Not only will you be able to find out information about some of the various camp programs that are operated by the Rec and Parks and held at various locations throughout the County, but you'll also be able get information from businesses and organizations such as the Howard County Conservancy, Circle D Farm, Glenwood Country Day School and the Columbia Association.

Representatives from all the camps will be on hand and will be able to provide information and answer questions about their programs. There will even be some demonstrations throughout the day and anyone who registers on-site for a Recs and Parks camp will have their name entered into a drawing at the end of the day for a prize.

This event is free and childcare will be provided. For more information contact the Glenwood Community Center at 410-313-4840.

Did you know that Highland may be getting a pub at the crossroads? Rumor has it that it may be called "Highlanders"? It would be nice to have a pub where we can meet up with friends and have a drink.

The Crossroads may also be getting a restaurant, too. Both endeavors are still in the planning stages. The restaurant may be called "The Highland Inn" as the original name, The Fat Duck, apparently belongs to a Michelin-3-star French restaurant. Ah, that's life. Thanks to Dan O'Leary for these two tidbits.

By the way, the Greater Highland Crossroads Association, of which O'Leary is (still) the president, does a great job looking out for the interests of the Highland community. He and his intrepid leadership team spend a lot of personal time meeting with the Planning Board and other Howard County officials to discuss issues that face our community.

It's strictly a volunteer organization and these folks do a bang-up job. Membership in the association is only $50 a year. You can go to their Web site at www.highlandmd.org.

That's all for this week. Look after your neighbors. Remember our troops who are serving in harm's way. And don't forget their families. Commit a random act of kindness.
