Bond Mill Elementary and Laurel High School alumna Katelyn Krenzer left home Jan. 26 for Thailand as part of President Obama's first contingent of Peace Corps volunteers. For the first three months, Katelyn will be learning the Thai language and living with host families. Then she will be sent to her volunteer destination to assist in teaching English to Thai students. She returns to the United States in April 2011.
Katelyn graduated from Salisbury University in December 2007 with a bachelor's degree in sociology and a minor in psychology.
Pfc. Jeffrey Passmore and Pvt. Kevin Curran graduated from Marine Corps boot camp Jan. 9 and will be moving on to Camp Geiger, N.C. Jeffrey's brother, Cpl. Chris Passmore, is stationed nearby at Camp LeJeune.
The West Laurel Recreation Council is offering classes that we should all take a look at. For instance, in March, ballroom and Latin dancing classes will begin with an instructor couple who have their experience teaching dance classes on cruise ships. Have you ever wondered, if with a little instruction, you could be the next Monet? Find out by taking the Art for Adults class coming in March.
Cooking for Kids will be held Feb. 5, 7-8 p.m. (After School and Anytime Snacks) and Feb. 12, 7-8 p.m. (Make Homemade Ravioli). Sessions are $8 per person.
The WLRC classes are held at the West Laurel Community Building unless otherwise specified. To register, call Deerfield Run Community Center at 301-953-7882.
The West Laurel Neighborhood Annual Family Nite at Fairland Aquatics Center will be held Friday, Feb. 27 from 6:30-8:45 p.m. Kids must be picked up on time. Bring the whole family for just $2 per person.
Get well wishes to Doris Reynold, beloved former Bond Mill Elementary kindergarten teacher and West Laurel Civic Association Board member, who is recovering from a bad fall. Keep Doris in our prayers for a fast recovery.
Kudos to Kyle Curran, a senior at Pallotti High School, who was selected to play soccer for the elite DC United U-17 team.
Happy Sweet 16 to Rebecca Jayne, who celebrated her special day on Jan. 29. On the same day, Phil Passmore celebrated his 27th birthday.
Donna Harris' 49th birthday was Jan. 26. Her husband, Bruce, went skiing all over Utah, escaping injury only to come home and break his arm. Get better soon, Bruce.
