First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ellicott City is welcoming its new senior pastor, the Rev. Eugene Kern. He was installed on Sunday, Feb. 22.

Kern is a graduate of Erskine College in Due West, S.C. and the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, S.C., also his home town. He earned a doctorate degree in ministry from Drew University. Ordained in 1979, he has served churches in South Carolina and Florida. He also served as assistant to the bishop in the Florida-Bahamas Synod.

Kern and his wife, Jackie, have two children; a son, the Rev. Travis Kern and his wife, Heidi , of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and a daughter, Kimberly, a graphic designer in Orlando, Fla.

First Evangelical Lutheran Church is located at 3604 Chatham Road, Ellicott City. Sunday worship services are held at 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. with Sunday School at 10 a.m.
