If you enjoy sounds from the past and you want to help a good cause, mark your calendars for Saturday, March 28 and plan on attending "Covers for the Cure." This fundraising event will provide great musical sounds by DisFunktion, a 1950s-modern rock, jazz and blues band; Casimir Funk, a 1950s and '60s rock band; and Presence Band -- performing a tribute to Led Zeppelin featuring Damon Foreman and John Hawkins.

These bands will be performing at Hammond High School from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost for tickets will be $5 in advance and $7 at the door. The band members, for the three bands, include Ricky Wise, David Kaiser-Jones, Julian Borelli, Juliette Bell, P.J. Hemler, Sam Winslow, Eric Roher, Mara Seibert, Meghan Kneale, Michael Levy, John Hawkins, Damon Foreman, Sarah Brodine, Mike Morton and Sabastian Berruz.

If you have attended a "Phil's Diner" play in the past, held at the Savage United Methodist Church, you would have already heard the music provided by DisFunktion. In addition to the great music, the money raised by these bands goes for a great cause, diabetes research.

So mark your calendars, put your poodle skirts and saddle oxfords on, roll up those blue jeans, slick back the hair into a "DA" and drive on over to Hammond High for a stroll in the past.

Cami Wise wants to insure that everyone has a great time and good seats, so you will want to plan on coming early to this event! Sharon Brown also wants to let the community know about this event, because Phil's Diner is usually a pretty packed place.

Have you ever been asked a question about your town that you could not answer? Well, the Savage Historical Society recently received a query as to "Who is the oldest living person in the town of Savage?"

So, not being able to answer, we are asking for your assistance. If you are 85 years or older, please furnish us your name, gender, age and date of birth, how long you have resided in Savage and a telephone number. You can even add a little history about yourself, if you would like when responding.

You can either send the information to the SHS by mail at: Savage Historical Society, PO Box 73, Savage, MD 20763-0073, or you can call in your information by phoning the SHS secretary Helen Rushing at 301-725-1241 or 301-466-0408.

We really do want to hear from you, so please help us obtain the best and most accurate answer by providing us your information by April 1. Be sure to keep reading as the answer will be forthcoming.

A community-wide Easter Sunrise Service will be held at the Savage United Methodist Church April 12 at 7 a.m. All of our local churches, Countryside Fellowship Church, First Baptist Church of Savage, Bethel Assembly of God and Savage UMC will all participate. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come and hear the message of Jesus' resurrection.

In celebration of Volunteer Appreciation Month, Neighbor Ride, a volunteer-based nonprofit organization dedicated to decreasing isolation and improving the quality of life for Howard County's older residents, is teaming up with the Volunteer Center Serving Howard County to promote volunteerism among those 60 and older.

For those seniors who want to volunteer their time helping others and giving back to our community, but have no transportation, the Neighbor Ride program will offer county residents over 60 years of age, transportation for volunteering, as well as for medical and personal care appointments, religious services, social outings, exercise and educational classes, shopping and other day-to-day activities.

Neighbor Ride and the Volunteer Center Serving Howard County are pleased to jointly announce that no-cost transportation will be available to seniors for their local volunteer activities throughout the month of April, officially designated as Volunteer Appreciation Month.

The no-cost rides will be provided through Neighbor Ride's Senior Volunteer Fund, established with generous support from the Ascend One EDGE Fund. For those Seniors who want to volunteer and may be wondering where their special skills and talents are needed in the community, they are encouraged to contact the Volunteer Center Serving Howard County at info@volunteerhoward.org or by phoning 410-715-3172. They can also check the Center out on the Web at www.volunteerhoward.org.

I want to extend happy birthday and happy anniversary wishes to my readers who will be celebrating during the upcoming week.

Just a reminder -- April Fool's Day is just around the corner.
