April 25 is shaping up to be a busy day, at least in my house. One event you certainly don't want to miss will be the Nick Antlitz 5K Race and Fun Run.

You may recall reading about Nick in my column last summer. He is a 2006 Glenelg High School graduate who was injured in a basketball accident last summer and remains paralyzed.

A fundraising run will take place April 25 at 8 a.m. at Bushy Park Elementary School for him as race proceeds will benefit the National Transplant Assistance Fund, in honor of Nick Antlitz.

Registration fees and donations are tax deductible, and each participant will receive a race T-shirt.

Download the registration form online at www.nickantlitz.com and submit by Friday, April 10 to take advantage of early registration fees.

Early registration fees are $15 for an individual and $50 for a family of four. Additional T-shirts for family registration can be purchased for $10. Registration after April 10 costs $20 for an individual and $60 for a family of four.

This is a great way to participate in a healthy event and contribute to members in our community. Call Melissa Starinsky at 301-854-5593 with questions.

Don't forget to stop by the Glenwood Community Center this week and check out the treasures being offered at their community yard sale. The event takes place April 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

As the weather has turned warmer, and we have turned our attention towards the great outdoors, many are spending time working in the garden, cleaning things up after a long winter, and getting ready for the summer growing season.

If you have a gardening question or problem that you are looking for a bit of advice, the Howard County Master Gardeners are available to lend a hand. The Master Gardeners have resumed their plant clinics at the Glenwood Branch Library. They will be on hand to answer questions April 18 from 10 a.m. to noon as well as April 20 and April 28 from 7-8:30 p.m.

The Glenelg High School Counseling Center will be presenting a College Planning Symposium April 22 beginning at 7 p.m. in the Glenelg High School Cafeteria. If you are a parent of a sophomore or junior, this informative evening is sure to interest you.

The night will begin with a presentation by Moira O'Malley, a counselor at Glenelg High School, discussing how to prepare for the college application process. Following this presentation, attendees will break into smaller groups to attend up to three sessions, discussing topics such at The Public College Experience, SAT Preparation, The Private College Experience, Financial Aid and Scholarships, Athletic Recruiting and NCAA Standards, or Support for Students with Disabilities at the University Level.

Parents and students are both welcome to attend. Discussions will be led by representatives from local colleges including University of Maryland, McDaniel College, Howard Community College, and Stevenson University. For additional information, contact the Glenelg High School Guidance Office at 410-313-5535.
