Calling all Volunteers! The Savage Community Association will be sponsoring a Community Clean-up Day, in honor of Pat Mullay, at Savage Park on Saturday, April 18 from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants are asked to bring gloves, rakes, hoes, trimmers, wheelbarrows, or other yard tools, if possible. Some tools will be provided. I have been told that students will be able to earn community service hours for this clean-up event, which will cover the area in and around the park. So, come one and all and help make our park clean and beautiful for everyone. In case of rain/wet weather, please call 410-313-4452 after 7:30 a.m. on the day of the event to check if the schedule has changed.
Whew! The weekend of April 18 is sure looking busy in our town. I just want to send a special "thank you" to Behnkes Nursery for agreeing to donate six Panicum Heavy Metal plants (a native ornamental grass), that grow 6 to 7 feet tall and bloom in late summer to fall. Thanks, Behnkes, for helping make our town beautiful.
The Savage United Methodist Church invites the community to a special presentation of "Solomon." This musical will be presented on Friday, April 17 at 7 p.m. and again on Saturday, April 18 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the church's social hall. The event is free and open to the public, but attendees are asked to bring a canned good item for the local food bank. This event will provide attendees with a musical look into the life of King Solomon and will surely be a delight to all. If you would like additional information about this event, please call 301-725-7630.
Just in case you have not heard, Terrapin Adventures is coming to Savage. The Historic Savage Mill will be hosting a grand opening celebration April 17 from 2 to 5 p.m. Terrapin Adventures is all about fun! They have created a new realm of adventure with only wood, rope and cable. The company is on the cutting edge of fun bringing vacation-type adventures to Savage. They combine fitness and thrills within the context of caring for and understanding our environment. It is fitness in a group environment without the heavy equipment; it is thrills without the carnival crowds; and it is exploring, learning about and enjoying nature as it was meant to be. If you want to see people in action, climbing and swinging on ropes on the banks of the Patuxent River by Historic Savage Mill, you will want to mark your calendar for this event.
Also on tap at Savage Mill in early May is a celebration of art and earth. The Mill will join Maryland Public Television and radio station MIX 107.3 FM to host the "GreenLife Festival" May 2 and 3. This event, which will include live bluegrass and rock music, food samplings by Rams Head, eco-friendly demonstrations by Mill merchants and zip-line rides by Terrapin Adventures, will benefit the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Additionally, the ongoing "GreenScape" art exhibit will showcase local artists' work and culminate with an auction and reception on May 3, at the Savage Mill Cotton Shed Gallery.
Amanda Christian has lots more information about this event, so please call her at 240-568-9181, Ext. 204 or e-mail her at Amanda@bmcgroup.us or go to www.greenlifefestival.com.
