The First Baptist Church of Savage is beginning their run of summertime movies. Pam Nixon, youth leader and outreach ministry, wants the community to know that the FBC invites everyone to come and enjoy a family-friendly evening of food, fun and fellowship.

The movie night will be Saturday, May 16 and the night's showing is entitled, "Faith Like Potatoes." This movie is based on a true story and will truly warm your heart. The movie is about a Zambian farmer, Angus Buchan, who leaves his farm in the midst of political unrest and racially charged land reclaims and travels south with his family to start a better life in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. With nothing more than a caravan on a patch of land, and help from his foreman, the Buchan family struggle to settle in a new country. Angus, being of Scottish descent, faces mounting challenges, hardships and personal turmoil, and quickly spirals down into a life consumed by anger, fear and destruction.

Based on the inspiring true story by Angus Buchan the book was adapted for the big screen and weaves together the moving life journey of a man who, like his potatoes, grows his faith, unseen until the harvest.

This inspiring true story of a rugged South African farmer, Angus Buchan, is set in the turbulent hills of the KZN Midlands. It depicts Angus' manic quest for material success, but is slowly transformed into a wild love for God and people, as he wrestles with faith, hope, natural disasters and tragic personal loss.

It is a great movie and everyone is invited to enjoy this presentation. The evening will begin at 7:30 p.m. with hamburgers, hotdogs, popcorn, dessert, beverages and door prizes!

The movie will be shown outdoors, so come prepared for cooler temperatures as the sun sets. If there is rain, however, the movie will be moved indoors and shown in the church auditorium.

The FBC of Savage will show this Christian film and hopes to have a packed area. As Pam has said, "The movie is awesome and the entire evening is free."

Now a family cannot ask for more than that!

The Savage Historical Society will hold their monthly meeting Monday, May 18, beginning at 7 p.m., in the Faith and Ministry Center (9032 Baltimore Street).

The topic for the evening's meeting will be "A Savage Wedding to Remember," presented by Charlotte Clokey Watts. The topic is meant to be an introduction to the historical calendar "Wedding Memories from Savage, Maryland."

This calendar will be ready for distribution during the upcoming 2009 Savage Fest, June 6 and 7. The SHS meetings are open to the community and everyone is encouraged to attend. During these meetings, a lot of information about our community is shared so if you want to learn more about history of Savage -- why not attend an SHS meeting? Galen Menne, SHS President, welcomes comments and questions concerning our community and will provide information on request.

Do you enjoy art? How about art in the making? The Historic Savage Mill sponsors an "Art Walk" the third Friday of every month. On Friday, May 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. patrons of the "Mill" can enjoy some light refreshments as they take art walks to view art in the making and art on display. So, for a relaxing and enjoyable Friday evening, mark your calendars!

For all of my readers who will be celebrating an upcoming birthday or anniversary during this week, I want to wish you all a very happy one!
