The Bond Mill Elementary School PTO spring carnival is finally here. This marvelous Bond Mill tradition kicks off a series of momentous occasions leading us right into summer. The spring carnival is this Saturday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the newly landscaped school grounds (thanks to the students and parent volunteers from the May 11 Beautification Day).
Saturday promises to be a fun-filled day that will include rides, games, prizes, a silent auction, raffles, plenty of delicious food, and homemade baked goods. The PTO has been organizing and planning all year; the multitude of volunteers all have their jobs and this extremely well-attended annual carnival has been anxiously awaited by our community. The community is cordially invited to join Principal Justin FitzGerald for an awesome family day.
The Bond Mill family will celebrate its 40th anniversary on Saturday, June 13 from 3-7 p.m. at the school. Bond Mill Elementary School has been the heartbeat of West Laurel for four decades, and you can rekindle memories with fellow colleagues and school mates while celebrating forty years of precious memories.
This anniversary celebration is free of charge; however donations will be most welcome and will give the community an opportunity to give back by contributing to the Bond Mill Playspace Refurbishment Project. A playground facelift is needed for the safety and enjoyment of the school children. Bond Mill needs the help of the community to see this project through, so plan on celebrating this milestone with old and new friends. To attend the 40th anniversary, please RSVP at http://bondmillpto.org or call Rhonda Whitley at 202-258-3238.
Congratulations to Caitlyn Yacuel, a fifth-grade student at Bond Mill, who was the local winner in the American Legion Auxiliary Laurel Unit 60 essay contest. Caitlyn placed first with her essay, "Soldiers Past and Present; America Honor Your Veterans." She then progressed to the second level of the competition and placed first again with the Southern Maryland District. Caitlyn's essay was then sent to the state competition where she placed second. On April 27, Caitlyn was honored and recognized by Mayor Craig Moe at a City Council meeting. Sometimes it takes a fifth-grader to remind us about the importance of patriotism and our debt to those soldiers and veterans who have fought for out nation's freedom.
John and Tricia Whittles are proud new grandparents to Jaxon Nicholas Vardy. Their daughter, Jillian, gave birth on April 9, 2009 at 2:55 a.m. Jaxon weighed in at 7 pounds, 12 ounces and was 21 inches long. Jillian, Johnny and baby Jaxon Vardy are doing very well. Tricia and John are spending lots of happy moments with their first grandchild. If he’s anything like his grandfather, he'll be a fervent Redskins fan.
