The Bond Mill carnival was a great success. It is "said" that it is not allowed to rain on the carnival and this year was no exception. The weather held out as families enjoyed the pony rides, dunk tank, cake walk and so many other wonderful activities. Principal Justin FitzGerald was everywhere to be found, greeting children and adults alike.

The school grounds were incredibly beautiful with all of the "Grade Level" gardens. The landscaping was just so pleasant and soon the playground will have a pick-me-up, too, with new playground equipment.

Join Bond Mill Elementary School's 40th anniversary celebration on June 13 from 3 to 7 p.m. Donations to the Playspace Refurbishment Project are most welcome.

The West Laurel Recreation Council will hold its annual Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Social and bike parade on Friday, June 5 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the West Laurel Community Building. This is a family event, so parents: bring the kids with handlebar streamers and clicking spokes for a wonderful parade of personally decorated bikes and trikes.

The West Laurel Civic Association is sponsoring a community clean up Saturday, May 30 from 9 a.m. to noon (rain or shine). Volunteers are needed; report to the West Laurel Community Building to pick up supplies and choose your stretch of roadway to beautify by picking up litter. This is a good opportunity to give a little back to the community, and also for high school students to pick up some community hours for graduation requirements.

Proud West Laurel grandfather Carl Roeder wishes to share the good news about the birth of his grandson, Brennan Cody Roeder. Brennan's mom and dad are West Laurel's Mark Roeder (Laurel High School) and Laurel city's Lauren Fink (Pallotti High School). Lauren and Mark now live in Suffolk, Va., where Mark is stationed in the Navy at Norfolk. Mark has been in the Navy since 2005, and had an 18-month tour in the Persian Gulf on the Dwight D. Eisenhower and is currently assigned to the Carl Vinson aircraft carrier, which is finalizing its retro-fitting in Newport News, Va., and getting ready to return to duty back at sea. Other proud grandparents include Stephanie Roeder of Virginia Beach, Va. (formerly of West Laurel), and Andrea and Pat Fink of Laurel.

John and Tricia Whittles are proud new grandparents to Jaxon Nicholas Vardy, born to their daughter, Jillian, April 9, 2009 at 2:55 a.m. Jaxon weighed in at 7 pounds, 12 ounces and was 21 inches long. Jillian, Johnny and baby boy are doing very well. Tricia and John are spending lots of happy moments with their first grandchild. If he's anything like his grandfather, grandmother and uncles, he'll be a beach baby and a fervent Redskins fan.
