Sports are in full swing in Elkridge!

The Elkridge Hurricane 10U baseball team won the "Walk the Plank" tournament over Memorial Day weekend in Olney. The Hurricanes won five straight games, giving up only 13 runs. In the final game, the 'Canes beat the Olney Buccaneers, 9-0. Thanks to coaches Chris Jakubek, John Jung and Ray Huddleston for their dedication to the team.

Each year, all the middle schools in Howard County compete in the Lacy Memorial Tennis Tournament. This year it was held at River Hill High School in the middle of May. Elkridge Landing Middle School was well represented by seventh-graders Ajay Chatim, Jay Pancholi and Max Balter.

Ajay and Jay competed for the first time as a doubles team and faced tough competition in their first match.

Max participated in the singles competition again this year to try to repeat his singles championship from last year. Max was down 1-3, 15-40 in the finals when all games were called for a rain delay. The next day, Max came back in great form to win the seventh-grade singles and reclaim his championship. Hooray for Max!

Congratulations to Max, Ajay and Jay for proudly representing ELMS in this annual county tennis tournament.

Principal Tom Saunders congratulated the boys on their participation in the competition and presented Max with his trophy during the morning Newsbreak.

Rockburn Elementary School recently held its annual Field Day. The students spent the day having fun with various activities, including tug of war, wiffle ball, hurdles, disc throwing and sack races.

The day ended with the much-awaited, delicious, ice-cold snow cones in colors of the rainbow. The Rockburn students would like to say a special thanks to Claude Sacker of Cindy's Soft Serve at Elkridge Corners Shopping Center for donating all the supplies for the snow cones.

Deep Run Elementary School students took second place in the spring session of Maryland/DC Stock Market Gameā„¢ competition, organized by the Maryland Council on Economic Education.

Congratulations to team members, Chi Chi Adigwe and Leon Nguyen, who started with an imaginary $100,000 and over a 10-week period invested in corporations on the New York, American and NASDAQ exchanges in an attempt to increase the size of their portfolio. These students were honored at an awards program May 27 at Towson University.

Happy June birthdays to my sister, Patti Sapp, Joan Steinrucken, Susan Johnston, Patti Bensinger, Joan Green, Lorena Riesett, Matthew Nichols Jr., Elliott Trenary, Sarah Baker, Marc Gildersleeve, Cheryl McAleese, Rachel Oliver, and Nicholas Moy.

Well folks, this is my last Elkridge column. I will treasure the time spent getting to know you, the wonderful people of Elkridge, and look forward to seeing you around town. I loved sharing your accomplishments these past years.

There are way too may "friendliest neighbors" of our community that have not been highlighted as of yet, so please keep the small town spirit of Elkridge alive, and it will stay friendly.

Thanks for all the heart-felt notes and kind words these past few weeks concerning my "passing the torch" to new columnist Kristi Harvey, they were truly appreciated.
