"Gotta move. Gotta dance." That was the mantra of local businessman Matt Eyre and his lovely wife, Alison, who along with three other couples, danced the night away during the "Soiree" annual fundraiser for Howard County Tourism.

Matt and Alison rehearsed for months in anticipation of the "Dancing with the Dazzling Howard County Stars" portion of the evening, which was held June 2 at Belmont Manor, in Elkridge.

Matt is vice president of Eyre Bus Tour and Travel and Alison is an IT recruiter and partner at Strategic Resource Group, in Columbia.

As busy parents, hard working career people and always active civic and community participants, for Matt and Alison, this wasn't work, but loads of fun. For the night of June 2, Matt and Alison could only be described as Fred and Ginger. Congratulations.

Thank you Everyone. Those were the words of Marcie Barnard of The Pink Cabbage on Triadelphia Road. Marcie was thrilled and grateful for the participation of dozens of folks who helped make the Pink Cabbage's Strawberry Days such a success.

The antique and collectibles consortium known as the Pink Cabbage, held an all day flea market May 31 with the aim of raising money for the American Cancer Society.

At day's end, when all was tallied, Marcie was pleased to announce a sum of $1,500 which was earned for the American Cancer Society. Not only that, said Marcie, "Everyone had a great time."

The Hare Raisers 4-H Club held its 29th rabbit show at the Howard County fairgrounds during the Memorial Day weekend.

The large Sheep and Goat building was the new setting for the show, with a state of the art sound system which made for smooth running. Nine families including the Bodines, the Clarks, the Kerrs, the Flesters, the Handlers, the Jennings, the Nicolsons, the Splitters and the Trouts, assisted Dr. Wendy Feaga, the Hare Raisers 4-H leader.

All counted for, there were more than 22 club members, parents and leaders participating. More than 300 rabbits were entered in the first of two shows, with 309 rabbits entered in the second show. More than 60 exhibitors came from Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Another successful show for this hard working local 4-H club.

"Make this summer count," requests Colleen Konstanzer, community outreach coordinator for Neighbor Ride, Inc.

She is hoping that local parents will consider volunteering as neighbor ride drivers this summer season, and in doing so, teach their little ones a bit about volunteer service.

"Our hope is that moms and dads will take advantage of the opportunity to volunteer as drivers, bringing their children along, and making a difference in the community," Konstanzer said. "This is an opportunity to provide a wonderful inter-generational experience for the kids."

Daytime, evening and weekend opportunities are available for adults and families looking for a flexible and rewarding volunteer experience.

Neighbor Ride is a volunteer based nonprofit dedicated to decreasing isolation and improving the quality of life for Howard County's older residents who for a multitude of reasons are unable to drive.
