The Intrepid Traveling Tribe Sanford is on the road again. This column is being written in Roswell, N.M. Russell, Melissa, Hailey (almost 8) and Joel (age 4) and Grandma Sanford (Yes, that's me) picked up a CruiseAmerica RV in Phoenix. So far, the family adventure has taken us to Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest, Painted Desert and Roswell. Next up, will be Carlsbad Caverns. Meanwhile, there is exciting news in Clarksville.

Clarksville Elementary fourth-graders have always placed well in the National Social Studies League Olympiad. This year's class topped them all by answering 35 questions relating to Social Studies to place third in the nation. How's that for fantastic?

The word from those in attendance is that River Hill's graduation was incredible. Best wishes to all the new alums.

The River Hill High School poms team is planning to go to Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade with your help. They've scheduled a tasty fundraiser for Thursday, June 18 from 6 p.m. until closing at Mama Lucia's. Enjoy dinner Italiano and show your support for this Night Out event. The pom team thank you.

Blue jeans, even old well-worn jeans, are often still in use as wearing apparel. Eventually, they become no longer wearable. Then what? You can recycle them into insulation.

The children and Environmental Committee at Linden-Linthicum United Methodist Church are collecting old denim jeans or other denim clothing as part of a nationwide drive by National Geographic Kids.

The denim wear will be used to make insulation for a Habitat for Humanity home.

"I'm bored." It's a refrain almost every parent has heard during summer break. You could take them for a ride to meet new friends of another generation and make a world of difference in the life of an older resident. Hours are flexible, daytime, evening or weekend.

Neighbor Ride seniors thrive and the volunteers are richly rewarded. For information, contact 410-884-RIDE or volunteer@neighborride.org.

When the Clarksville Picnic began 130 years ago, this was a rural farming area. Many things have changed over the years, but the picnic remains. It's the last Saturday in June, this year, it's June 27.

Mark your calendar now and plan to learn more. Better yet, plan to attend. Parking and admission are free. There are rides, games and refreshments purchased with tickets that cost 50 cents each. There are raffles. The $10, 000 cash raffle is popular as is the quilt raffle. This year's quilt is called "bowties," an old pattern using autumn colors.

Entertainment as presently scheduled is:

Illusion by Vick, 1-2 p.m.; Anglestone band (Christian rock), 2-4 p.m.; Joe Carta band (Bluegrass), 4:30-6:30 p.m.; Cloggers, 6:30-7 p.m.; Joe Carta band (Western), 7-9 p.m.

See you at the picnic.
