Fifty years. That's a long time. About two generations. A golden anniversary.

There's a local Fulton couple, Paul and Doris Menehan, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 14.

Paul is originally from San Francisco and Doris is from Hilo, Hawaii. They were married at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Washington, in 1959.

Paul spent two years in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. After a career that spanned almost 40 years, Paul retired from the National Security Agency in 1988.

Doris retired from the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab in 1989. They have two children -- David, who is married to Valentina, and they have a 2-year-old daughter named Sophia; and Kathleen, who is married to Chris Spinolo, and they have seven childen. Their oldest daughter, Ruth, was to be married to Ryan Abel on Paul and Doris' golden anniversary. That's pretty cool.

Paul and Doris planned an anniversary celebration at Rosedale Manor, in Hollywood, followed by a trip to Maui, Hawaii. Congratulations to Paul and Doris and their family. Semper Fi.

If you are looking for something with which to kick-start the summer vacation, then may I suggest a visit to River Hill High School June 25-27 to watch a production of "Blithe Spirit," put on by the school's theater arts department and performed by the You Can Always Come Home Players.

This is their second annual production and the actors are graduates from River Hill and Marriots Ridge High Schools who "join forces to celebrate the performing arts."

Kathy Fremuth, the one who sent me the e-mail, wrote that she "was shamelessly promoting the show." So, here's a shameless plug for it.

The play, written by Noel Coward, is about socialite and novelist Charles Condomine who is haunted by the ghost of his first wife. Each evenings' performance starts at 7:30 p.m. in the River Hill High School auditorium.

Tickets are $10 per person. Proceeds from the production will benefit The You Can Always Come Home Players Fine Arts Scholarship Fund. Advanced tickets are available at the River Hill front office, Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For assistance, call 410-313-7120 and ask for Nancy Duffy or Carla Styczynski. Tickets will also be available at the door on the nights of the performance with the box office opening 90 minutes prior to curtain.

If you have a child born between September and December 2006 and are looking for a preschool for your child, the Emmanuel Methodist Preschool has openings for the next pre-school year. Classes meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Jackie Horvath, administrative assistant at the school, said that there are openings in other classes, too.

For more information, call the school at 301-725-5178.

So, are you looking for a volunteer opportunity for you and your kids? Make this summer count and make a difference in the lives of Howard County residents as a Neighbor Ride volunteer. Bring your kids along for the ride as you help out older County residents who need a lift to appointments such as doctor and health care appointments, cultural and social activities. You'll be richer for it and your kids will thank you.

For more information, call Rosemary Noble, volunteer coordinator, at 410-884-RIDE or volunteer@neighborride.org for more information.

Finally, if you are interested in a golf tournament, Reservoir High School is sponsoring one. It takes place Monday, June 22 at Patuxent Greens Golf Course. The fee is $100 per entrant. If you are interested, e-mail Adam Leader at aleader@hcpss.org.

That's all for this week. Have a safe summer. Look after your neighbors. Say a prayer our troops who are serving in harm's way. And remember their families too. Pay it forward and commit a random act of kindness.
