It seems that many of us are feeling the squeeze of a tightening economy all around us. The Glenwood Community Center has been faced with some tough economic decisions, too.

Because of budget cuts, the center will be making some changes to hours and fees, effective July 1.

Remember that the center will continue to work hard to remain your best source for healthy, family-oriented recreational opportunities, providing quality service and products at a reasonable price.

Effective July 1, Glenwood Community Center hours will be from 8 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday-Saturday, and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Sundays.

The community center will now also be closed on all future county observed holidays. In addition the community center will be closed Dec. 26-Jan. 1, in accordance with the county furloughs outlined by County Executive Kenneth Ulman.

Effective Sept. 28, 2009, Glenwood Community Center membership fees will be increased for all users. With these adjustments the center will be able to maintain their high standards and continue to provide excellent service that you deserve.

The adjustments include:

* Youth Center ID (5-15 years old) -- $25 / $50 non-resident annually;

* Adult Center ID (16+) -- $25 / $50 annually;

* Senior Center Member (50+) -- $5 one time fee;

* Senior Fitness Pass (50+) -- $25 / $50 annual (exclusive senior fitness hours 8-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.);

* Daily Center Use Fee -- $5/$7;

* Replacement Card Fee -- $10/$15.

If you choose to purchase an annual membership to the Glenwood Community Center, there are many benefits, including access to the Gym during open hours and drop-in programs, entrance to Teen Zone, a supervised after-school open gym and game room with Nintendo Wii & Xbox 360 -- Monday-Friday, 2:30-5:30 p.m.; 50+ Drop-In Fitness Room Use -- Monday-Friday, 8-10 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.; Complimentary Coffee and Tea -- Monday-Friday, 7-10 a.m.; access to game room with ping pong and pool table - Daily; Discounted Community Center activities and events; and receipt of a seasonal Community Center E-Newsletter.

Speaking of the Glenwood Community Center, and the many services it provides, their next Saturday Night at the Movies event will take place SaJune 27, at 7 p.m. For the cost of $2 per person, families can enjoy a viewing of "Horton Hears a Who" in the center's movie lounge. Your movie ticket includes popcorn and a drink. Pre-registration is preferred by calling 410-313-4840.

If all of the wet weather these past few weeks has left your car in need of a good cleaning, you may want to stop by the old Bushy Park Elementary School on Route 97, in Glenwood, Saturday, June 20 from 9 am to 2 p.m. for a car wash.

Members of the Glenelg High School boys basketball program will be sponsoring a car wash in hopes of raising funds for their program. The car wash is free, however donations will gladly be accepted, so make plans to get a shiny car while supporting local boys basketball.

I recently heard from April Force Pardoe, owner of AFP Interiors, who is currently sponsoring an online photo contest to benefit Maryland SPCA. The contest, called Rooms for Rover, is an opportunity to win free decorating services from AFP Interiors, while at the same time helping to save the lives of animals. In order to participate, contestants can submit photos of those rooms in their home that require redecorating to www.rooms4rover.blogspot.com.

Contestants are encouraged to enter photos for one or all rooms in their home. Photo entries must be submitted by Tuesday, June 23. From June 29-July 17, people can go online and vote for their favorite room in need of a makeover.

Room makeover winners -- those who receive the greatest number of votes -- will be announced on July 20.

The first-place winner will receive three hours of decorating services from AFP Interiors and an original work of art of either your pet or home by Fifi Flowers.

The second-place winner will receive a one-hour decorating consultation with AFP Interiors.

In order to participate in the contest, a $5 entry fee is required for each photo submitted and a $2 fee for each vote.

All proceeds go directly to the MD SPCA at the end of the contest. AFP Interiors specializes in interior decorating with a focus on color and interior redesign. To learn more, go to afpinteriors.com or call 410-446-6340.
