Bond Mill Elementary School closed the school year with not just one but two promotional ceremonies bidding adieu to both the sixth-graders and fifth- graders. Next fall, the school is going to Pre-K through fifth grade. After 40 years, sixth grade will no longer be a part of the school. This year's fifth- and sixth- graders are both headed for Martin Luther King Middle School where principal Robin Wiltison will take good care of them.
On June 15, the fifth-grade promotional ceremony was held at the school. The orchestra, which included fifth-graders Ryan Hammond, Cher Panlilio, Ciara Silex, Amrita Ahuja, Jasmine Lolin, Joseph Hinkle, Jariatu Karnara, Karina Low and Michael Miller, opened the program. Principal Justin FitzGerald welcomed the outgoing fifth-graders, teachers and families. Memories from kindergarten through fifth were shared by Claire Mudd, Sarah Tayel, Michael Miller, Danielle Dyson, Ashleigh Jacobs, Taylor Roar, Danielle Evans, Jeremy Yabes, Billy Rosenberg, Amrita Ahuja, Ashley Akateh and Kevin Kim. The band played an upbeat selection, and band members included Heather Kim, Taylor Roar, Claire Mudd, Caitlyn Yaquel, Elijah Bocage, Zachary Landau, Christopher McCormick, Akanimoh Phillips, Ellie Hartranft, Brandon McKitrick, Billy Rosenberg, Yaregal Tilliksew, Abbey Holmes, Kevin Kim, Zak Reid and Kedar Rollins.
The Mary Jane Lusby Award was presented to Kevin Kim and Cher Panlilio. The Lori Wood Courage Award was presented to Belviane Songong.
I'll cover the sixth-grade ceremony in my next column.
Congratulations to Joseph Karpman, who graduated from Eleanor Roosevelt High School on June 5. Joseph was seated in the Row of Honor with other students who maintained a 4.0 grade point average for all four years. Joseph will be attending Vassar College in the fall where he will play rugby. Anne and Larry Karpman are very proud of their successful son
The West Laurel community sends very best wishes to Shannon Farley who is hospitalized right now at Children's Hospital. Shannon's courage and determination, along with our prayers and good thoughts for a speedy recovery, will get her out of there all the faster.
