Photos of Laurel from the early 1900s, the 1950s and today are on display in an exhibit the Laurel Historical Society prepared for the Laurel Library. "Happens in Laurel," on view at the Laurel Library, juxtaposes scenes from an early 1900s Emancipation Day parade and this year's Main Street Festival; a school group visiting the Laurel Museum in 2009 and students from the 1950s, and also includes early 20th-century fire fighters.

The library exhibit ties into the current exhibit at the Laurel Museum, "Shake, Rattle N Roll: Laurel in the 1950s," and is part of a growing partnership between the Laurel Historical Society and the Laurel Library. This summer the library is featuring books about the 1950s that tie into the museum exhibit, and in September will feature a reading list related to the museum's Sept. 10 program on school segregation, "Separate But Equal Has No Place."

The Stanley Memorial Library is located at 507 Seventh St. For hours of operation, go to www.prge.lib.md.us/Lib/Branches/la.html. The Laurel Museum, 817 Main St., is open Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Sundays 1-4, p.m. and by appointment.
