Are you interested in taking a stand for your community?

Are you interested in providing a show of "unity," and fellowship with your neighbors and other community members?

Have you heard of National Night Out? This event was originally organized by law enforcement organizations across our country as a means for communities to take a stand against crime.

Community members were asked to turn their lights on and make a physical presence in their communities by being out on the streets, talking with neighbors, until late into the evening on a designated evening.

This year's National Night Out is planned for Aug. 4 and community members are being asked to do the same thing as in the past -- make a physical presence in our town.

In addition, the Savage Community Association is also helping with this year's event by having an ice cream social at the Carroll Baldwin Hall. Community members are invited to turn on their porch lights, secure their houses and property, and stop by the Carroll Baldwin Hall for ice cream.

While at the hall, neighbors can spend some time just catching up on the latest events in their lives. This national event always gets notoriety, and will once again help communities everywhere take a stand against crime.

By the way, the SCA is looking for new and old members to help with the planning of community events. The SCA is planning on hosting a wide range of upcoming events, including a school supply drive/coat drive, Fall Festival, Holiday Celebration and Community Clean-Up Weekend.

If you are interested in learning more about the SCA, attend a monthly meeting (I will post information here) or call Travis Cleaver either at 301-725-6760 or go to www.SavageCommunityAssociation.com.

The Savage Historical Society will not hold meetings in July or August; however, they will re-convene Sept. 21 where the planned topic is dairy milk bottle collection, presented by Jason Jess.

Helen Rushing, SHS secretary, wants community members to be aware that the 2010 historical calendar "Marriage Memories from Savage," as well as calendars from the past several years, is still available for purchase. These calendars, and other Savage memorabilia, can be purchased by contacting her at 301-725-1241 (or, if that number is busy, call 301-466-0408).

If you have questions about the SHS, call Helen or e-mail her at FrostysPen@aol.com (please refer to SHS in the subject line) or by mail at Savage Historical Society, P.O. Box 73, Savage, MD 20763-0073.

The Bread of Life Food Pantry, located in the First Baptist Church of Savage, is in need of canned goods and non-perishable foods. Typically, during the summertime months, when many of our local schools and organizations take a hiatus, the pantry tends to deplete rapidly. The reason is because many of these organizations do not meet and "food drives" do not occur.

If you can donate any canned goods or non-perishable food items, contact Linda at the FBC of Savage by calling 301-725-3944 or just drop the food items at the church office.

I want to wish all of my readers who will celebrate either a birthday or an anniversary this week a very happy one!
