The 131st annual Clarksville Picnic is now history. Mother Nature cooperated with a lovely day. Over the next few days and weeks we'll be getting details of this year's event.
St. Louis the King Roman Catholic Church was established in Clarksville in 1855. You can still see the chapel standing next to the cemetery on Ten Oaks Road.
St. Louis School opened in 1923 with 41 students in seven grades. How things have changed and grown over the years.
Registration is now open for the 2009-10 school year.
The school held its first alumni reception as part of the Clarksville Picnic this year. Dozens of alumni attended and shared the joy of reminiscing and renewing old friendships. The alumni reception is sure to become a fixture at the Clarksville Picnic for years to come.
There were no attendees from the class of 1924. However, Lorraine Miller Thompson from the eighth-grade graduating class of 1938 and Floyd Wilson from the eighth-grade class of 1939 did attend. Some of those from the 50-year class of 1958-59 were Mike Stevens, John O'Brien, Paul Thompson and Jerry and Louise Lear.
If you are a St. Louis School alumnus, be sure to plan to meet with classmates next year and invite others you know who are no longer in the area. The more the merrier.
Vacation Bible schools are blossoming like wildflowers all over town. Christ Lutheran Church will host a Summer Bible Camp July 13-17 from 9 a.m. until noon. Registration is requested. For more information, call 301-854-2100 or e-mail office@christlutheran.net. You might also want to go to www.christlutheran.net.
That same week will find children gathering at St. Louis Church from 8:30 a.m. until noon for a fascinating vacation Bible school based on Rome in the time of St. Paul. For more information, call 410-531-6688.
Every day can and often does bring surprising changes. Ree Cascioli and Margaret Walton sent word that one of their favorite markets closed as of July 4. The Burtonsville Dutch Country Farmers Market is relocating and will reopen in late August or early September at 9701 Fort Meade Road, in Laurel. To learn more call 877-421-1454 or go to www.burtonsvilledutchmarket.com.
Now is the time to register for children to be prepared for fall. Rising juniors and seniors will want to prepare for October with a PSAT/SAT prep course sponsored by River Hill HS PTSA Aug. 10-14 from 8:15 a.m. until 1:15 p.m.
Chris Tappis will teach math from 8:15-10:15 a.m. Wayne Tromble will teach critical reading/writing from 10:45 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. The cost is $275 for both sessions or $175 for one or the other.

There is space available for children born between Sept. and December 2006 to attend Emmanuel Methodist Preschool beginning in September. The class will meet Monday-Wednesday-Friday, 9-11:30 a.m. Other classes also have openings. To find out about the school, call 301-725-5178.
The second annual Enchanted Forest Employees Reunion is in the works for Aug. 15. There are no employee records, so folks at Elioak Farm (new home of fairytale pieces from the Forest) are relying on word-of-mouth to create a database.
The day promises to hold loads of fun for all. From noon until 4 p.m. rain or shine there will be special events for all the family. If you are or know of a former Enchanted Forest employee e-mail ClarksMotherGoose@gmail.com.
