Did you know they have live music on Thursday evenings at Great Sage restaurant in the Clarksville Square shopping center? The popular Charlie von Nordeck Quartet will be playing cool jazz from 8:30-11 p.m. this evening. The kitchen will be open until 10 p.m. On Aug. 27, the Pat Love Project will offer straight forward classic jazz, same time, same location. You'll find interesting drink and menu options, too.
Sadly, we must bid adieu to summer. The calendar may indicate another month of summer, but Howard County schools open Aug. 31 and the last free concert of the summer Courtyard Concert series is this Friday evening at River Hill shopping center. Meet friends and neighbors in the fountain area and wrap-up summer with the music of Naked Blue from 6-8 p.m. You might even opt for a picnic supper.
River Hill neighbor Rachel Baliff is delighted to announce the success of her newly opened Greenberries children's and maternity boutique in King's Contrivance Village Center, in Columbia. The shop is near Harris Teeter and across the court from Michael's Pub. They'll be hosting a grand opening celebration on their three-month anniversary, Saturday, Aug. 22 with special sales, giveaways and activities for the whole family.
Rachel likes promoting recycle, reuse and other earth-friendly practices. You'll also find new eco-friendly items in the shop. Store hours are Sunday, noon-5 p.m., Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturday, including grand opening day, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Greenberries and the Women's Giving Circle of Howard County have joined forces to support women and children in the community. Consignors are given the opportunity to donate all or a portion of sales earnings to WGC. To learn more about Greenberries and the Women's Giving Circle go to www.greenberriescompany.com and www.womensgivingcircle.org.
The staff at Dayton Oaks Elementary School is excited to share the news that DOES met the state standards for Maryland School Assessment. They want to thank all who made this possible by your support. Meeting standards requires the partnership of staff, parents and others in the community. The staff is looking forward to seeing old and new families at an open house Aug. 28 at 2:30 p.m. Parents should expect individual results of assessments in the mail by Tuesday, Aug. 25. If you don't get the letter, call the school at 410-313-1571. You can also learn more by going to www.mdreportcard.org.
Life Line Screening will return to Triadelphia Adventist Church, on Brighton Dam Road, Sept. 4. Life Line screens for stroke/carotid artery risk, heart rhythm. abdominal aortic aneurysm, peripheral arterial disease and osteoporosis all in one place in a relatively brief time for only $149.
I know at least one slender local hiker/bike rider who felt no need to see a doctor, but took the tests and discovered he needed immediate medical attention.
If you don't have insurance or don't see your doctor on a regular basis, taking the screening tests could be lifesaving. Screenings are by appointment. Call 1-800-679-5102 or go to www.lifelinescreening.com.
Did you visit the 64th annual Howard County Fair? I visited with grandchildren John, Claire and Dominic Sanford, from Monrovia. We stopped immediately inside the entrance to shell and grind corn the old-fashioned way, by hand. Then, it was on to the rides before beginning a steady stream of food and water purchases. The kids had never tried funnel cake before, but definitely will in the future. Health food this is not, but neither was the rest of our consumption -- ice cream, pretzels, french fries, hot dogs and chicken strips.
Here's a birthday note just in. Wilbur Bennett, of Brighton Dam Road, celebrated his 83rd birthday on July 31. Wilbur's wife, Theresa, prepared a special birthday lunch. Wilbur's local daughter, Jeanette, was there to celebrate along with daughter, Mabel, and her husband, Brian, who came all the way from Tennessee. Best wishes for many happy birthdays to come, Wilbur.
