I am having such fun watching my backyard birds. The bright yellow finches are everywhere scrambling for the thistle seed. And I am having the most fun observing the hummingbirds. I hadn't seen a lot of the hummingbirds this summer but there are plenty of the diminutive birds twittering about now. My feeder is on my deck outside and at any given time you can hear the vroom of the sprite-like creatures zooming past your head on the way for a drink of the sweet nectar. I never tire of watching them flutter about at lightning speed.

I learned something very interesting in Angie Reyburn's Russet neighborhood column last week. For those of us who are novice bird watchers, we can participate in the 2009-10 season of Project Feeder Watch, which will start on the second Saturday of November and will run for 21 weeks. Participants study various bird species that visit their backyard feeders throughout North America. For detailed information and to sign up, go to www.birds.cornell.edu/pfw.
