What a great group of young people were spotted during a recent St. James United Methodist Church treasure sale. Orchestrated and organized by Barbara Anderson and Nancy Thompson, the sale was a fundraiser for the St. James Youth Group's "Camp Hope" treasury.

Each early summer, a group of teens from St. James heads to western Maryland for an annual housing rehabilitation effort. The group holds a variety of fundraisers throughout the year. The affable and responsible youth who pitched in Sept. 19 included Glenelg High School sophomores Olivia Elisio and Maria Smith, Glenelg Country School junior Jim Moxley, and Mount View Middle School seventh-grader Emily Anderson. More than 24 youth group members pitched in as part of the "Camp Hope Team." The group is currently planning a pancake breakfast and holiday shop for Nov. 14.

St. James United Methodist Church will also hold a Coffeehouse on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. and a yard sale Saturday, Oct. 3, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The Coffeehouse will include free entertainment, coffee, tea and snacks. All are welcome. St. James is on Route 99, just off of Route 32.

Lots of news in from Hare Raisers 4-H reporter Nicole Pysnack. According to Nicole, the September meeting was chock full of interesting and educational items on the care of rabbits. The club members enjoyed an informative Power Point presentation in which they viewed a variety of rabbit hutches from basic and simple to extensive barn apparatus.

The 4-H students gleaned a lot of good information on rabbit care and the use of feeders and water and grooming supplies. During the meeting an announcement was made noting club member Leah Jennings as the winner of a $1,200 scholarship from the Maryland State Rabbit Judging Contest which was held at the Maryland State Fair.

The Hare Raisers leader, Dr. Wendy Feaga, said 2009 was a busy summer for 4-H.

"Between 4-H workshops, the county fair and the state fair, I am still trying to catch up," the local veterinarian said.

Congratulations to the members of the recently elected slate of officers for the Maryland DECA 2009 state team. DECA is an association of marketing students. Officers from our region include State President Bradley Carpenter who attends Glenelg High School as well as the Secretary of the organization, another Glenelg High student, Julianne Lee.

The best bargain hunting grounds in Howard County are alive and well. Did you realize that the large brick warehouse building just over the Patapsco bridge in Sykesville was at one time an apple butter factory?

Thanks to the clever innovations of The Apple Butter Market manager Ivy Wells, the grounds of the old apple butter factory are currently the site of a monthly outdoor flea market. Sykesville's popular Sunday flea market series, finishes the season with closing day set for Oct. 4, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Past vendors have included a watercolor artist, many stalls of fresh farm produce, a seller of vintage jewelry, flea market stalls, crafted items and collectibles and Kenyan straw bags.

Ivy promises treats in the form of "Kettle Corn" for those who hanker for the best popcorn on the East Coast. Proceeds from the flea market will be used to restore the Historic Apple Butter Warehouse.
