Congratulations go to Jimmy Full, of Mount Airy. Jimmy's heifer, Cherry Knoll Ark Pride 807, was selected as Grand Champion Angus Heifer in the 4-H and open shows at this year's Maryland State Fair, in Timonium.

Jimmy's sister, Brittany Full, continued her reign for showing prize-winning animals. Her DVA BF Lucas McCain 810 was selected as Grand Champion Angus Bull and the Supreme Champion Bull at the State Fair.

Jimmy and Brittany are supported by long-time farming families, including parents, Doug and Donna Full, of Full-Day Enterprise, grandparents, Emmett and Audrey Full and Calvin and Eileen Day, of Day View Acres, in Marriottsville.

The Ladies Auxiliary of St. Michael's Catholic Church will be hosting its semi-annual Friendship Tea Party Oct. 24 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Tea and refreshments will be served. There will be live music and door prizes.

Tickets are $12. To purchase tickets, call 410-795-6239 or 301-829-6924.

Recently, I mentioned in my column that the Howard County Master Gardeners were sponsoring a composting demonstration. Georgia Eacker, Master Gardener coordinator, asked me to also mention that the Master Gardeners are recruiting new volunteers for the 2010 Master Gardener training, which will be held Jan. 27-March 31, 2010, from 9 a.m. to noon at the new 4-H office at 3300 North Ridge Road, in Ellicott City.

The mission of the Master Gardeners is to provide education. You don't have to be an expert gardener as there are lots of other skills needed by the program, including writing, computer knowledge, and social networking.

To receive a Master Gardener registration packet, call the University of Maryland Extension Howard County office at 410-313-2707.
