The West Laurel Civic Association will hold its fall general membership meeting Thursday, Oct. 15 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the West Laurel Community Building, which is located at the intersection of Bond Mill Road and Brooklyn Bridge Road. All West Laurel neighbors are encouraged to attend. Though the meeting begins at 7:30 p.m., all are encouraged to arrive closer to 7 p.m. so that you can catch up with friends and neighbors, pay your $15 dues if you so wish and be ready to begin the meeting promptly at 7:30 p.m. After Cub Scout Pack 1673 begins the meeting with the presentation of colors, the Good Neighbor Award will be presented to Meredith Passmore and Kevin Foster for their heroic action in helping a neighbor last winter. The major focus of the evening will be the H1N1 virus (swine flu). Speakers, including those from the Department of Public Health, will address emergency preparedness and prevention of spreading the virus. The meeting will conclude with an update from state delegates representing District 21, which includes Prince George's County, and District 4 from Montgomery County, who have all been invited.

This meeting is very special because we will meet the newly elected WLCA officers who are: president, Melissa Daston; first vice president, Cassandra Hostetler; second vice president, Barbara Sollner-Webb; zoning officer, Dennis Cook; recording secretary, Roger Keehner; and treasurer, Laurice Crawford.

The vacuum leaf collection has been discontinued in Prince George's County. In West Laurel we have been able to rake our leaves to the curb and the county comes and vacuums them up. That is not happening this year. The county will continue to pick up bagged leaves as part of its yard waste collection program on Wednesdays here in West Laurel through Jan. 15. Remember, do not rake leaves to the curb because the county will no longer vacuum them up. Please share this information with your neighbors.

Bond Mill Elementary School will be holding its 27th annual craft fair on Saturday, Nov. 21. This is the time that all craftors need to rent their tables. Tables rent for $25 on the floor and $35 on the stage (school provides tables). This is always a very well-attended event and another treasured Bond Mill tradition. If you would like to rent a space or table, call the office soon at 301 497-3600.
